Holiday Events 2013: Pop and Jazz

holiday-entertainment-mary-mary.JPG

Gospel duo Mary Mary will join comedian Sinbad in "A Gospel Holiday Celebration" at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Kirk Franklin usually gets all the credit for fusing gospel with rap and other contemporary styles, but few popularizers have done more to bring church music to the secular than Mary Mary. On their 2000 album "Thankful," twin sisters Erica and Trecina Atkins spiked their gospel with jazz, R&B, hip-hop and close vocal harmonies. "Good to Me," an album cut, featured the young Destiny’s Child, but it was the swaggering, radio-friendly (and partially AutoTuned) "Shackles (Praise You)" that earned Mary Mary a Top 40 hit.

The Atkins sisters, who write or co-write their material, crafted that song with Warryn Campbell, a pop-crossover specialist who has worked with Kanye West and Mos Def. Gospel purists cried foul, but the act has proceeded undeterred, pointing out that their lyrical content has always been devout.

At their holiday concert, the singing duo will pull from "A Mary Mary Christmas," a 2006 seasonal effort that contained carols, spirituals and original pop songs. Mary Mary will share top billing with comedian Sinbad, who starred in "Jingle All the Way," an exercise in holiday silly business, and who, as the son of a preacher, knows plenty about gospel music.

The show, billed as a "Gospel Holiday Celebration," takes place at Prudential Hall of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, 1 Center St., Newark, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. $39.50 to $69.50; call (888) 466-5722 or visit njpac.org.
