A federal judge has denied former Congresswoman Corrine Brown's request to exceed the legal word count in her appeal Tuesday.
The denial comes one day after prosecutors filed a motion claiming Brown's appeal was too long. Legally, an appeal can be 13,000 words, but Brown's is about 16,000 words.
However, prosecutors said word counts should only be exceeded "for extraordinary and compelling reasons." Brown's trial "was not especially long or complex. This appeal presents no extraordinary and compelling reasons for additional words," the motion read.
Brown was found guilty on 18 counts involving fraud and tax evasion. Her attorneys say Judge Timothy Corrigan erred when he removed Juror No. 13 from a deadlocked panel who claimed that a "higher power" told him Brown was innocent.
