High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ soccer advances to semifinals of Best in the West Winter Classic

Skylynn Rodriguez scored on a goal assisted by Reese Bodas, as the Newport Harbor High girls’ soccer team defeated Capistrano Valley 1-0 in a pool-play match on Saturday at home in the Best in the West Winter Classic.

Jessica Gardner recorded the shutout for Newport Harbor (6-1).

The Sailors also defeated Riverside Poly 3-0, receiving goals from Nicole Laz, Alyssa Sims and Rodriguez.

Newport Harbor will face Temecula Valley in the semifinals on Dec. 21.

Corona del Mar 2, Menifee Paloma Valley 0: Megan Chelf had a goal and an assist to lead the Sea Kings in a pool-play match of the Best in the West Winter Classic on Saturday at Downey Warren High.

Erin Jones added a goal, and Kennedy Cambell produced an assist for CdM (6-0). Sydney Walls turned in six saves in the shutout.

Corona del Mar 2, Long Beach Wilson 1: Nikki Senske had a goal and an assist for the Sea Kings in a pool-play match of the Best in the West Winter Classic on Saturday.

Avery Daugherty had a goal, and Mia Ferrentino added an assist for CdM.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 6, Winchester Temecula Prep 0: Brooklyn Motske had two goals and four assists for the visiting Tritons on Saturday in a nonleague match.

Leila Bahnsen also scored two goals, and Jo Snider recorded her third shutout of the year for Pacifica Christian (5-1).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 64, Cerritos Valley Christian 58: Ryan Miller scored 22 points, helping the Sailors win the Tartan Classic title on Saturday at St. Margaret’s.

Levi Darrow contributed 17 points for Newport Harbor (10-3), which handed Valley Christian its first loss of the season. Luke Bashore had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Newport Harbor’s Robbie Spooner was named the tournament MVP, while Darrow and Bashore made the all-tournament team.

Mater Dei 90, Pacifica Christian Orange County 38: The Tritons lost in the Corona del Mar Beach Bash championship game on Saturday.

Pacifica Christian fell to 9-2.

Corona del Mar 64, West Torrance 63: Jack Stone had a team-high 23 points for the host Sea Kings (6-2) on Saturday in a Corona del Mar Beach Bash game.

Laguna Beach 54, Yorba Linda 42: Nolan Naess scored 24 points to lead the Breakers (8-4) on Saturday in the Gary Raya SoCal Elite Classic.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 66, Santa Ana 16: Willa Rath scored a team-high 11 points for the host Sailors on Saturday in a nonleague game.

Chloe Swanson added eight points and nine rebounds, and Emma Coatsworth had eight points and seven rebounds for Newport Harbor (7-3).
