Did someone spray paint that lobster?
A fisherman in Maine caught a rare white lobster on Aug. 24.
The lucky fisherman, Alex Todd, 48, of Chebeague Island, Maine, told ABC News, “I’ve never seen a white one. This one was translucent with just a hint of blue in it.”
The Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association chalks up the strange coloring to a genetic condition called leucism, which affects pigment, ABC News reports.
Todd is no stranger to the seas either. He’s a 10th generation fisherman who’s had his lobster license for 42 years. Even he said it was “different” and “really cool.”
After being revealed as a female lobster who’d been marked for carrying eggs, the white-pearl crustacean was returned to the ocean.
Todd told ABC News, “Even if it had been male, it’s an oddity enough that, why cook it for a $4 lobster?”
