K-State Battles, Earns Eight First-Place Finishes at Hornet Invitational

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The K-State women's rowing team kicked off their spring training camp this weekend at the Hornet Invitational on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California, where they earned eight first-place finishes and put together numerous strong performances.
"I was really pleased with the team and how they performed this weekend," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said of the team. "Whether it was a win or a loss, from race to race they were getting faster and making improvements, so that was really good to see."
The morning session on Saturday got started with three head-to-head races against St. Mary's in the 1v8+, 2v8+ and v4+ races, in which the Wildcats won each event in convincing fashion. In the 1v8+ race, the boat consisting of coxswain Samantha Scott and rowers Marissa Butrum, Elaina Grantham, Grace Reilly, Kennedy Felice, Mattie Warner, Kaley Dalinghaus, Rachel Haskell, Lauren Costello finished in 6:53.7, while St. Mary's came in at 7:02.1.
After winning the first three races against St. Mary's, the K-State 3v8+ boat faced off against Gonzaga, where the Wildcats capped off a perfect morning session by finishing first in 7:18.6.
Following the morning session on Saturday, the Wildcats returned to race against Sacramento State in the afternoon session. In the 3v8+ race, the boat consisting of coxswain Aimee Farrell and rowers Samantha Samskey, Taylor Hartman, Marisa Rodriguez, Laura Clement, Aubrey Gilchrist, Paige Rohner, Emma Witter and Tessa Davids came in first in 7:51.1.
K-State also claimed a first-place finish the v4+ race, where the 1v4+ and 2v4+ boats came in first and second place, respectively, to round out the first day of the invitational with six first-place finishes.
"They were learning in their boats, they're starting to learn how to race and make improvements," Sweeney said. "Overall I was very pleased with how the boats did on both days."
On the second day of competition, the Wildcats raced against San Diego State in what turned out to be a competitive series of races. K-State got Sunday started with a hard-fought second place finish in the 1v8+ race, where the boat finished in 6:41.7.
In the 2v8+ race, the boat comprised of coxswain Emily Johnson and rowers, Kaylin Edwards, Abigail Dressler, Natasha Johnson, Jordan Lund, Molly Ross, Madison Rebel, Samantha Bendrick and Caroline Geither edged San Diego State by finishing in 6:55.3.
In the final races of the Hornet Invitational, the Wildcats finished up their competition on Lake Natoma with a first-place finish in the v4+ race by the 1v4+ boat in 7:51.5, while the 3v8+ capped off the invitational with a second-place finish in their race.
Following the Hornet Invitational, the team will remain in Sacramento for spring camp training before heading south for the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, California on March 24-25.
