'Tis the season for mailbox thieves, and they were busy in the MatSu on Wednesday.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service says it's received reports of numerous mailbox thefts from Willow to Trapper Creek.

Jacob Gholson, the Postal Inspector Team Leader in Anchorage, said investigators are still trying to determine the extent of the thefts. He urged anyone who may have been a victim to contact investigators at 877-876-2455.

Gholson said mailbox thefts typically increase during the holiday season, and he suggested these precautions:

  • If you believe your mail was stolen, watch bank accounts for suspicious activity.
  • Report mail thefts and suspicious bank activity immediately to postal inspectors, because that will help them get bank security camera video of thieves if they try to cash your stolen checks.
  • Don't send cash through the mail because it cannot be tracked if stolen. Instead, send checks or gift cards, and keep the receipts.
