Every January there is a cultural, civic and soulful celebration in a musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, it's happening this Sunday at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center and here to tell us all about it, one of the many amazing performers who will be featured, Elouise Burrell.

About Elouise Burrell:
Elouise Burrell is originally from Palestine, Texas and is an acclaimed vocalist, percussionist, recording artist, dancer, actress and event producer. Shortly before she arrived in the Bay Area, after more than a decade of experience on the Texas music circuit, Burrell participated in a Texas Music Review tour of Western Europe and the USSR. In addition to contribution musical pieces to various dance, theater and performance art pieces.
When not performing with the Cultural Heritage Choir, Burrell performs in various world music and jazz projects. Burrell co-founded a the popular Bay Area world music group - Amandla Poets, a 10-piece South African reggae band. Her passion for various music of the world has lead her to voice and percussion concerts in the Echo Canyons of New Mexico, to the soulful jazz and traditional mix of the Mbaqana sounds of South African townships, to her Texas Blues roots, rounded out by the music of her generation - Motown and R&B revues.
She has performed solo at SF's Boom Boom Room; at Liberty Lunch, one of the U.S.'s premiere world music venues in Austin Texas; at the legendary Austin blues club, Antoine's; and at the Houston's International Music Festival to name only a few. Plus various jazz, reggae and world music festivals with the Amandla Poets throughout the US and Canada including SF's Reggae in the Park, Bimbo's, Pridefest, San Francisco Jazz & Wine Festival; Calgary's Afrikaday, Austin's Music Hall, Clarksville Jazz Festival; Sierra Nevada World Music Festival and Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts and many more.
Burrell has shared the stage and/or recorded with the Neville Brothers, Etta James, McCoy Tyner, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Hugh Masekela, Lucky Dube, Eddy Palmieri, John Handy, Eric Bibb, Santana, Taj Mahal, Al Green, Sonny Okosun, Etta James, The Looters,John Handy, The Meditations, Buddy Miles, O.J. Ekemode, Kotoja, Zulu Spear, Third World, Stevie Ray Vaughn as well as co-producing three solo billboard charted singles recordings " Cream Always Rises to the Top", "It's Alright" and "Thinkin' About S.E.X." and two full CD's of Amandla Poets "Makube Njalo" and "Khawulexa" on her label Scintilla Records.
The Cultural Heritage Choir, lead by Linda Tillery is a Grammy © nominated voice and percussion ensemble, now in its 16th year continues its mission of preserving African-American culture through stick, story, song and dance. This mission is pursued through academic research, review of historical recordings, documents and video footage and most importantly - live performance. Their percussion driven vocals are rooted in the deep-south and also strongly connected to their West African and Caribbean origins. Performers include Rhonda Benin, Eloise Burrell, Melanie DeMore and the newest member Bryan Dyer. They have recorded 5 CD's.
