The best of the week

Week 3 of the high school fall sports season has come and gone, with many standout performances throughout the week. From a 200 yard rusher to a cross country meet champion, with many team accomplishments, as well, Week 3 had its fair share of moments to remember. Here are a few highlights of the week:

Male athlete of the week: Fredonia/Brocton running back Joell Colon

The Fredonia/Brocton running back only needed six carries to make a lasting imprint on the high school football scene in Week 3.

Colon rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns on Friday night to lead the Hillbillies to a 50-13 win over Eden/North Collins.

Before the season began, Hillbillies coach Greg Sherlock said that his team needed to find a reliable, every down running back to replace the production from Brendan Plaister from a year ago. After the first three weeks of the season, Colon has emphatically established himself as the go-to guy in Fredonia.

Female athlete of the week: Fredonia cross country star Emily Brown

Emily Brown is one of the best cross country runners in Western New York. She proved that once again when she took first in the Lake Erie State Park meet on Tuesday. Brown’s time of 20:51, ahead of Silver Creek star Ellie Decker and Dunkirk’s Jericha Petrella.

“Emily (Brown) ran a smart race,” said Fredonia cross country coach Carol Zirkle after the meet. “She’s such a strong competitor. She doesn’t let the weather get to her.

Brown will have another chance to show off her talents on Tuesday, as Fredonia travels to Long Point State Park.

Team of the week: Westfield/Brocton Wolverines boys soccer team

The Westfield/Brocton Wolverines began the season 1-2, with a 6-1 loss at home to Southwestern on Sept. 4. Things were not looking good for the Wolverines. Then, all of a sudden, the team flipped a switch.

Since the Southwestern loss, Westfield/Brocton has rattled off four straight wins, including three straight in the division. After a 5-1 win last weekend over Frewsburg, the Wolverines posted back-to-back 2-0 shutouts over Pine Valley and North Collins this week.

“We’re talking well on the back end,” said Westfield/Brocton coach Jay Pikiewicz after Thursday’s win at North Collins. “We’re distributing the ball well, passing well and communicating.”

The Wolverines are back in action on Tuesday against undefeated Maple Grove.

Quote of the week: “I don’t know where we are as a team right now. I don’t know if we’re the team from Week 1 or the team from Week 2,” — Dunkirk head football coach Mike Sarratori.

After a blowout win Week 1 and a nail-biter Week 2, Dunkirk was not sure what to expect headed into the week. After a 47-6 win Friday night, it’s safe to say Dunkirk is going to be just fine. The Marauders had a pair of defensive touchdowns, as well as a pair of rushing touchdowns from two different rushers — Quantavis Kleckley and Angel Reyes — to earn the blowout win.

Sarratori wasn’t completely satisfied with the win, but it’s hard to complain after a 35-0 first half from a team surrounded with uncertainty coming in. The Marauders now sit at 3-0 headed to Newfane on Saturday.

Week 3 was quite a week among our local high school sports teams. It’s anybody’s guess who will be the next in line to step up and make a statement.
