Body shop catches fire, damage costs in the thousands

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A fire that started in an auto shop left an employee with serious burns and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

It happened just before 1:00 p.m. at Stampley's Auto and Body located at 1751 Scenic Hwy.

Fire investigators say the fire was caused by sparks that originated from a cutting torch which was in use at the business. An employees ignited the torch near a gas can, and the gas can flashed which caused the vehicle he was working on to ignite and spread to three other vehicles.

The worker received 2nd degree burns and was transported to a local hospital by EMS. His injuries are reported to not be life-threatening.

Firefighters quickly arrived in seven units on the scene and extinguished the flames, but not before the blaze swept up a total of $50,000 in damages. The sum rounds up the $30,000 worth of damages done to the vehicles, and $20,000 is estimated for the auto building.
