The Ones: Noname’s “Song 32”

The must-hear rap song of the day

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear curated by the Levels team. We sort through all the new songs—across all the platforms and subgenres—so you don’t have to. Thank us later.

Noname - “Song 32”

“Ya’ll niggas got Diddy money, don’t push me I’m atom bomb/I’m Obama pushing the button, in Lybia, Pakistan/Humanly a hypocrite, the sinner and the civilian/The pettiest that it gets, I’m America at its best”: Out of fear of condemnation and an unwillingness to deal with backlash, most would censor their critiques of former president Barack Obama. But not Noname. On “Song 32,” the Chicago wordsmith uses self-reflection, pop culture references, and clever wordplay to paint a damning portrait of current American culture. “A lone gunman outside the parking lot, Missus America,” she raps in a conversational, breathless delivery over a funky Phoelix instrumental. “I’m Viacom, Viacom, I’m Chappelle in Pelle Pelle.” With ease, Noname can both touch on heavy topics and lighten the mood.
