STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former President Jimmy Carter will visit Staten Island in October for the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy.

Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, are scheduled to volunteer on Staten Island on Oct. 11 to promote Habitat for Humanity's efforts to restore 100 Sandy damaged homes in the borough, said Joshua Weber, the project director for the hurricane-relief efforts of Habitat for Humanity New York City.

The former president and his wife will be making stops in New York City as part of their 30th annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, which this year is scheduled for Oct. 6-12. The former president also plans to help build and rehabilitate homes in Oakland, Calif., and Denver, Colo.

Since 1984, the former president and his wife have given a week of their time each year to help build homes and raise awareness about the need for decent and affordable housing worldwide.

Returning to New York City on the 30th anniversary is significant since the first Carter Work Project took place in New York City, where the Carters and volunteers helped renovate a six-story apartment building

"We're hoping that President Carter's visit to Staten Island highlights the continued need here and all the work that Habitat for Humanity has done," Weber said.

"We will have volunteers out in Staten Island all week, who will be helping repair homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy," said Carly Blatt, marketing and communications manager for Habitat for Humanity New York City said about the project week in October.
