There was nothing to separate Derby County and Bristol City after the first half of Friday night's Sky Bet Championship encounter at Pride Park Stadium.

It remained goalless at the interval between the two promotion hopefuls.

Derby ended the half on top, with Johnny Russell being denied by the crossbar.

Gary Rowett made just the one change to the side that started the 3-0 victory at Birmingham City, as David Nugent was recalled up front in place of Sam Winnall.

New signing Cameron Jerome was named among the substitutes after joining from Norwich City on Tuesday.

Fellow striker Chris Martin was not involved, though, amid talk of a move away from the Rams.

Meanwhile, there was no return to the squad for midfielder Joe Ledley.

Ledley has been training this week following a back injury but sat out a fifth successive match.

With Bradley Johnson (back) still sidelined, Jamie Hanson was once again named on the bench.

Robins boss Lee Johnson also made one change following his side's 1-0 defeat to Norwich City.

Hordur Magnusson was recalled to the starting line-up in place of recent signing Liam Walsh.

Captain Bailey Wright was passed fit to play after recovering from a knee injury.

Famara Diedhiou, who scored in the 4-1 defeat of Derby at Ashton Gate earlier this season, was back in the squad for the first time since injuring his knee in October.

George Thorne signed a new contract with Derby before the game and might have marked the occasion with an early goal after being teed up by Tom Huddlestone in the third minute - but the midfielder's first-time effort was well over the bar.

The visitors settled into the game nicely and Scott Carson had to save low to his right when former Alfreton Town defender Aden Flint headed Marlon Pack's free kick goalwards 10 minutes later.

Josh Brownhill's shot was blocked by Curtis Davies after a rare misjudgement from skipper Richard Keogh in the 22nd minute.

Moments later, City had a great chance to open the scoring. Brownhill's header back into the box found Jamie Paterson unmarked eight yards out - but the former Nottingham Forest man blazed high over the bar.

Former Derby goalkeeper Frank Fielding was called into action for the first time after half an hour.

Russell was brought down 25 yards from goal and Matej Vydra's free kick around the wall was heading for the bottom corner until Fielding's intervention, palming the ball around his post at full stretch.

The Rams went close again a minute later. They kept the ball alive from a corner and Davies looped a header from six yards beyond Fielding, only for Flint to clear off the line.

There was more drama in the 35th minute, when Tom Lawrence was chopped down right on the edge of the box by Wright after a swift Derby counter attack.

Russell's free kick beat Fielding for pace but cannoned back off the crossbar.

The Rams were in the ascendancy but could not quite make their pressure count before the break.

Russell's volley across the face of goal was helped on by Keogh but he was unable to divert the ball on target from close range.
