DENVER – The Denver Pioneers (3-0-1, 0-0-0-0) scored twice with 1:52 remaining in the third period to tie the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks (0-5-1, 0-0-0-0), 3-3, on Saturday in Magness Arena.
After falling behind 3-1 through two periods, the Pioneers battled to force overtime with goals from
Cole Guttman and
Les Lancaster late in the third.
"Our guys didn't give up in the third period," Richard and Kitzia Goodman Head Coach
David Carle said. "It was nice to see them not give up. It was a gutsy effort to get the tie and get it to overtime. We're certainly not happy with the result, but Fairbanks played a really good game and we were fortunate to get it tied up and get it to overtime."
The Nanooks opened the scoring midway through the first period at the 9:57 mark when Kylar Hope raced down the left wing boards and fired a shot over the left shoulder of
Devin Cooley. Alaska-Fairbanks extended its one-goal lead on the power play at 14:31 of the frame when Ryker Leer received a low-to-high pass from Hope and put a backhander past Cooley.
After getting outshot 10-4 in the first period, Denver pushed back in the second period with a goal at 6:45 when
Slava Demin sent a stretch pass to Guttman who drove the net and left a rebound for Jarid Lukosevicus to tuck under the crossbar. The Pioneers' goal made it 3-1, but the momentum shifted back to the Nanooks after
Tyson McLellan was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding. Alaska-Fairbanks carried a two-goal lead and 21-11 shot advantage into the second intermission.
Liam Finlay highlighted the Pioneers' pressure early in the third period with a shot off the post, but it wasn't until 18:08 when
Emilio Pettersen found Guttman at the bottom of the left faceoff circle that Denver drew within one. Only 17 seconds after Guttman made it 3-2,
Ian Mitchell fed
Les Lancaster for a one-timer from the left point to tie the game. The Pioneers' third-period pressure tipped the shot margin, 25-22, in their favor.
Both teams failed to register a shot in overtime
Pettersen's two assists and Lukosevicius' goal extended their point streaks to four games. Denver went 0/5 on the power play and 3/5 on the penalty kill. Cooley made 19 saves.
