VENTURIA, N.D. -- One of the state's longest-serving legislators died Friday at the age of 83.
“The citizens of North Dakota lost a dedicated public servant today with the passing of William E. Kretschmar," Gov. Doug Burgum said. "We join the Legislature, friends and family who mourn his loss. William’s service to our state as an attorney, legislator, former Speaker of the House and active member of many civic organizations over the past half century is a testament to his passion for North Dakota and for the governing process. We are grateful for his legacy of public service. He will be missed.”
Kretschmar, an attorney from Venturia who had served in the House for all but four years since 1973, lost his District 28 GOP seat in the 2016 primary election.
