Tollway Worker Killed On I-294 Was Father Of 2 From Monee

David Schwarz is remembered as a longtime Illinois Tollway maintenance worker who would often help drivers needing assistance.

MONEE, IL -- The Illinois Tollway worker who was killed after having been hit by a semi-truck on I-294 near Alsip has been identified as David M. Schwarz, a 25-year veteran with the Tollway from Monee. Schwarz, 48, was performing his regular maintenance duties when he was struck by the truck.

Schwarz began his career with the Tollway as an equipment operator laborer and often performed duties such as removing snow, maintaining safe roadway conditions and assisting drivers who needed help, according to a statement from Illinois Tollway Executive Director Greg Bedalov.

“The Illinois Tollway Board and all Tollway staff are extremely saddened by the loss of our co-worker and colleague," Bedalov wrote in an email to media on Tuesday. "We offer our deepest condolences and our full support to David’s family, loved ones and friends for their heartbreaking loss.”

Schwarz was married and a father of two.
