Girls volleyball teams entered in this weekend’s Swing for a Cure tournament in Orlando know they’ve signed on for two days of solid competition on Friday and Saturday ahead of next week’s district tournaments.
Oviedo coach Jen Darty made the final weekend of her team’s regular season even more challenging. The Lions (16-4), rated No. 1 in Class 9A by MaxPreps, left Central Florida at 11:15 am. on Thursday to play a 6 p.m. match at Venice (20-5), the winner of last season’s Class 8A state championship.
Oviedo won a thriller in five sets — 25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 21-25, 15-5 — then made the 2½-hour return trip following the 6 p.m. match to gear up for tournament play on Friday at the Orlando Sports Center (6700 Kingspointe Parkway).
The Lions play 5A playoff contender The First Academy at 5 p.m. and Tampa Berkeley Prep, a 15-time state champ, at 7 in Swing for a Cure pool play matches on Friday — then three more times Saturday.
“I want it to be as tough as possible going into the postseason to best prepare us,” Oviedo coach Jen Darty said Thursday afternoon. “I’m lucky. My kids like to compete. They want to play the tough teams and they want to get after it.”
School is out for Seminole County public schools Thursday and Friday, which allowed Oviedo to make the trip to Southwest Florida and its girls to sleep in before they return to the court for tournament play.
Oviedo is joined in the tournament’s 16-team top-tier Premier Division by undefeated 8A Tampa Plant (16-0) and three more of the top five teams in MaxPreps’ computerized 9A rankings: No. 2 Lyman, No. 3 Fort Pierce Central and No. 5 Port Orange Spruce Creek.
Also entered are the No. 1, 2 and 4 teams in 6A: Merritt Island, Ponte Vedra and tourney host Bishop Moore; along with No. 3 5A Holy Trinity Episcopal of Melbourne.
Other area teams playing in the 16-team Premier pool are Olympia and Seminole.
Area teams in the 16-team Elite division include Trinity Prep, Winter Park, Montverde Academy and Lake Mary.
Play starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, leading up to semifinals at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 championship matches.
District tournaments start Monday. Area district finals will be played next Thursday at Oviedo, West Orange, Winter Park, Spruce Creek, Olympia, Gateway, East Ridge, St. Cloud, Deltona, Windermere Prep, Orangewood Christian and Geneva School.
