Jack Reacher trailer: Tom Cruise in Russian

Jack Reacher trailer with Tom Cruise, Russian narration. Various websites describe this Jack Reacher trailer as the film’s “international” trailer. For some, one size fits all. In fact, this is the Russian trailer, which features Tom Cruise’s name spelled in the cyrillic alphabet. I’m assuming the Swedish, Japanese, and Egyptian trailers will – at the very least – sound different and feature different alphabets. Else, “international” audiences will get mighty confused. Jack Reacher trailer ‘explained’

Can’t understand Russian? Here’s a brief Jack Reacher summary: Directed and written by The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, and starring Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher follows the titular Jack (Cruise), a former military officer-turned-criminal investigator, out to unravel the mystery surrounding five killings. Were they truly committed by a military sniper acting alone?

Jack Reacher is based on Lee Child’s novel One Shot, the film’s original title. (In my view, a better, more intriguing title as well.) Jack Reacher, for those who don’t know, is a recurring character in nearly 20 Lee Child novels.

Also in the eclectic Jack Reacher cast: Rosamund Pike, Jai Courtney, Robert Duvall, Werner Herzog, Richard Jenkins, James Martin Kelly, David Oyelowo, Martin Raymond-James, and Alexia Fast.

Previous Christopher McQuarrie / Tom Cruise collaboration

Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise have previously joined forces in another drama featuring a military figure: McQuarrie co-wrote Valkyrie (2008), in which Cruise portrays World War II German military officer Claus von Stauffenberg. Though only a moderate performer at the domestic box office ($83.07 million), Valkyrie grossed a solid $117.19 million overseas, where Cruise remains very much a megastar.

Other McQuarrie screenplays include The Way of the Gun (2000), which he also directed, and starred Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Toro; and the much-lambasted The Tourist (2008), with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie.

Tom Cruise, for his part, has been in the news because of Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages, which flopped at the box office but earned the actor mostly rave reviews, and as a result of ex-wife-to-be Katie Holmes’ divorce filing.
