Five Buffalo Bills to watch against the New York Jets

New week, more bad quarterbacks

The Buffalo Bills have just their second divisional game of the year this week on the road against the New York Jets. The winner of this game will hold third place in the AFC East. Unfortunately we won't see the battle of the rookie quarterbacks as Sam Darnold is sidelined with a sprained foot and Josh Allen will sit out another week due to his elbow injury. The Bills, much like the Jets, are on a losing streak and these five players could be the difference in this game.

QB Matt Barkley

Barkley will make his first NFL since week 17 of the 2016 NFL season. In a 38-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Barkley went 10-14 with 125 yards, no touchdowns and two picks. That sounds eerily similar to what we have been used to the past few games. Nathan Peterman hasn't been getting the job done, as if anyone expected him to and now its time for Barkley to soften the blow. This will be the fourth starting quarterback for the Bills this season through ten games. Barkley has been with the team for two weeks and I don't expect him to even be average. At this point, does it really even matter?

RB LeSean McCoy

McCoy hasn't had a good game yet this season and it doesn't all fall on him. The offensive line has been lackluster for most of the season in the run game and McCoy hasn't been able to get in a rhythm. On just 85 carries he has 267 yards, a whopping 3.1 yards per carry. McCoy is still the best weapon the Bills have offensively, and his poor performances are a part of the reason why the Bills haven't been able to function like an NFL offense.

G Wyatt Teller

Teller saw a significant amount of snaps against the Chicago Bears last week. For the past two days of practice he has been working with the first-team offense and it looks like he may be getting the start for the first time in his short career. Teller was taken in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Bills staff and fans have had high hopes for Teller ever since he had a strong training camp and preseason. He now has the chance to show what the future may hold for him and the interior of the Bills’ offensive line.

S Jordan Poyer

Josh McCown gets the start this week for the Jets and he has thrown 78 interceptions to his 97 touchdowns over the course of his career. Jets’ receivers Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson missed their second straight day of practice and McCown might be without two of his top targets. Poyer could have plenty of opportunities to create turnovers for this Bills defense—a unit that, with the way the offense plays, needs to do so often in order to keep themselves in the game.

DE Jerry Hughes

Kelvin Beachum is one of the better offensive tackles in the NFL and Hughes is on a three-game stretch without recording a sack. Hughes does create pressure at a good rate, but he hasn't been able to compile a double-digit sack season since 2014. He's off to his fastest start in that category since then. With Trent Murphy out again, Hughes is by far the best source of edge pressure that the Bills have on the field and his role becomes much more important.
