CNN's Christiane Amanpour tried to analyze the Brexit vote on CNN's New Day, with keen political acumen when she discussed the Brexit results. Her analysis came after listening to more of Donald Trump's press conference in Scotland, where he finally discussed the Brexit vote.
She didn't lower herself to the baseless arguments that were made by the Boris Johnson conservatives when she calmly said, " I think you heard a lot of 'they've taken back their country, they've taken back their country' and the thing is, from what?"
"From what?" Exactly! She observed that this slogan was very powerful in the run-up to the Brexit vote.
She continued, "Boris Johnson and all the main faces of the Brexit campaign said 'take back control, take back control, take back control' and that is what sunk in to people's minds that was an incredibly powerful mantra."
"What does it really mean?," she asked. "This is a sovereign country, it makes most of its own laws, governing just about everything war and peace, tax, finances, all of that, in Parliament behind me. There are a small number of laws relatively that are made in Europe. They are about the big global problems that need to be addressed. For instance the environment, regarding trade in a single market. For instance, obviously the free movement of people."
She said the "take back control" message was successful, "but it didn't really mean that there was no sovereignty in this country."
I think she was being a little too nice there because she's very smart and knows the "free flow of people" is the main factor driving the Brexiters.
Alisyn Camerota didn't hold back though and said, "Take it back for the people who belong here. He (Trump) spoke a lot about Germany, he said he has friends in Germany who used to be very proud to be German.....but we can decipher that he means the immigration issue."
There you go. it's the right-kind-of-skin-color vote, plain and simple.
CNN's Clarissa Ward concurred with her by saying, "the issue of immigration has galvanized and divided this country."
