Ed Asner talks Carmel International Film Festival
The Carmel International Film Festival garnered discussion among attendees regarding movie-making Thursday, including Hollywood legend Ed Asner who was on the Monterey Peninsula for the second day of the festival. The actor is in town for the screening the new short he stars in, "Super Sex," which was written and directed by Matthew Modine. Asner, 86, sat down with KSBW briefly at the Forge in Carmel to talk about the movie. The short is based on an old one-liner you may have heard before, and one Asner wasted no time in telling. "Want me to tell the joke? I don’t want to spoil it for the people who are coming there tonight," he said, while ordering a root beer. The movie is about a man on his 86th birthday whose children are stumped for gift ideas for their father. Instead of electing for something traditional, the children hire a prostitute for dad. "Knock, knock on the door and there is this gaudy hooker, and she says, ‘I’m here to give you ’Super Sex,’" Asner said, stopping just before the punch line. To see how it ends, you’ll have to see the film. The children are played by Kevin Nealon and Elizabeth Perkins, and the prostitute role went to Modine’s daughter, Ruby Modine. "When she read the script she said she wanted to play the prostitute, which was a little awkward, but I didn’t mind casting her because I knew she is a good actor," he said. Modine said he roped Asner into playing the role of the dad during a game of poker, and the casting is spot-on. "You can hear people gasp with glee when Ed Asner pops up in the film, there is just something that is immediately recognizable, and so lovable about him that makes people smile," Modine said during an interview Thursday afternoon. Many may recognize Modine as an actor. One of his first starring roles was in ’Full Metal Jacket," and more recently, he’s gotten attention for his work on the Netflix sensation "Stranger Things." "I am glad I did it, it was a tremendous experience, it was wonderful to reconnect with Winona Ryder," he said about his work on the original series. Modine said that when he was first approached by the show’s creators, he wasn’t interested, but somewhere along the way he got invested in what would soon be his character, the show’s villain, Dr. Martin Brenner. "I don’t want to give any spoilers to your audience, but how many people has doctor Brenner killed? And how many people has Eleven taken out?" Modine mused about his role and the show’s protagonist, played by young Millie Bobby Brown. Modine said it is his second time at the Carmel International Film festival. For Asner, it is his first, and he received a warm welcome. Wednesday night, Asner was honored with the festival’s Legends Award at the big dinner at Bernardus Lodge. "It challenges the beauty, if they had any, of all the other awards I have gotten, it’s a pretty distinctive award you give out," Asner said about the honor. Asner has been working in the film industry for decades, gaining fame for his work on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and gaining respect for his leadership while he was president the Screen Actors Guild. Asner said he has been to a lot of film festivals over the years, but there is something different about Carmel. "This has a nice, distinctive style, and I guess because it is Carmel, they don’t seem to be too poor," he said.
