Saturday’s regional sports roundup: CNU opens Capital women’s volleyball play by sweeping York (Pa.)

Women’s volleyball:

Christopher Newport (6-3), ranked 20th in Division III, beat York (Pa.) 25-20, 25-19, 25-16 Saturday at Freeman Center to open Capital Athletic Conference play.

Katie Piper had 15 kills, Abby Oren had 10, and Lauren Tracy distributed 40 assists for the Captains. The Spartans fell to 7-5. …

Host Charleston Southern earned a 24-26, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 win over Hampton.

HU got 17 kills from Megann Delgado and 13 from Kyndall Nicholas, plus 42 assists from Lena Reed-Petracek. Naiomi Rivera’s 33 assists and seven digs paced the Buccaneers.

Men’s soccer:

Jimmy Wilcox scored one minute into overtime to give Lycoming (6-1-1), the No. 18 team in Division III, a 2-1 victory over CNU (3-4) in Williamsport, Pa.

Justin Wilson netted a header in the 34th minute to give CNU the lead — Ethan Larson and Zachary Ballard gained assists on the play. But Lycoming’s Josh Cruz hit a 35-yard free kick to tie the score in the 70th minute, and the hosts won after outshooting the Captains 17-7.

Women’s soccer:

Winthrop (6-2-1, 2-0 Big South) won 3-1 over Hampton (1-4-1, 0-1-1) in Rock Hill, S.C. The Eagles led 1-0 for more than 72 minutes, then sandwiched a pair of late goals around Sydney Allen’s goal for the Pirates in the 85th minute.

Field hockey:

Washington and Lee ended No. 7 CNU’s four-game winning streak, defeating the Captains 3-2 in Lexington. Lauren Paolano scored the only goal of the second half in the 48th minute.

The Captains twice pulled even after one-goal deficits, thanks to goals by Ariana Samuel and Jackie Kotoriy.

Women’s tennis:

CNU freshman Amanda Yermal registered a notable victory to join two of her teammates — top-seeded junior Johanna Ranta-aho and junior transfer Olivia Reed — in the ITA’s Division III Southeast Regional in Fredericksburg.

Yermal upended the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Washington & Lee’s Valerie Marshall, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 for her second singles victory of the day. Ranta-aho and Reed also beat a pair of singles foes.

Men’s tennis:

Virginia Tech’s Mitch Harper outlasted Texas’ Yuya Ito 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-1 to earn a berth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Oracle Masters semifinals in Malibu, Calif.

After winning three matches in a row in Malibu, Harper saw his run end with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 semifinal loss to Southern California’s Laurens Verboven.
