The North Attleborough, Mass., house that was the backdrop for Aaron Hernandez’s shocking 2013 arrest for murder is finally off the market.
A local real estate investor and Patriots fan bought the infamous property for $1 million, The Boston Herald reported. It sold for $300,000 lower than the asking price.
“It has a bad name on it, but it’s probably one of the most famous houses in Massachusetts,” Arif Khan told The Herald. “Nobody wants to buy a house with Aaron Hernandez’s name on it, but I feel a name change and a little upgrade on the property will increase its value.”
Hernandez, once a rising star with the Patriots, bought the house for $1.3 million in 2012 after inking a five-year contract worth $40 million.
Khan, 23, who said the sprawling 7,100-square foot, 11-room mansion is in pretty bad shape and needs about $150,000 in renovations, hopes to move in by Christmas.
The new owner – who claims not to get a creepy vibe from the place – detailed the interior damage in his interview with The Herald.
“There were doors broken down, I assume by the police,” Khan said. “There was also a big water leak in the garage. The garage has to be gutted. But as an investor, that would not scare me. It just seems like there’s so much upside there.”
Khan told the Boston newspaper that his goal is to raise the value of the house to $1.4 million in the next year and then either sell or rent it.
The upscale Westwood Estates neighborhood is also home to former Patriot great Tedy Bruschi.
Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd, hanged himself in prison in April. The suicide came just days after the former NFL star was acquitted in a unrelated double slaying.
Lloyd’s body was found shot execution-style in an industrial park about a half-mile from Hernandez’s house.
His estate, which is facing three wrongful death lawsuits, will not necessarily profit from the proceeds from the sale. Hernandez still owes back taxes to the town.
