Car Week traffic revs up on the Peninsula
Car Week is full steam ahead as auctions start on Thursday, but that means the traffic is only expected to get worse.
Most people have said there is noticeable difference this week on the highways. And veteran visitors said they have secrets of their own to not getting stuck in a backup.
"The problem is is you never know. Some days could be really easy, we are planning to stay here later tonight to avoid it," said Brian Glusovich, who drove from Cambria.
"I always take the back roads, I know the area really well," said Daniel Delaney of Gilroy.
Whether you're stuck on Highway 1 or Highway 68 people say Car Week is worth the wait, and car week veterans tell us the traffic isn't that unbearable.
"Be patient take your time and don't be rushed. As long as you plan a head of time and know your'e going to be here for the afternoon, make it a day have lunch. Just enjoy the crowd, that's part of the event," said Landy Koerner, who came from Carmel valley.
When it's not traffic it's detours that are slight inconveniences that can impact travel time.
"When there is signs out there, or there are cones out there and they are saying the road closed, the road is closed!" said Lt. Michael Bruno with the Monterey Police Department.
Monterey police are focusing on bad driving. It stems from last year when police saw people racing underneath the lighthouse tunnel. Officers clocked speeds up to 100 miles per hour where the speed limit is 35.
"They have a lot of fast cars, and there is a lot of spectators that cheer them on and they get in the mood and they start to drive poorly and that's where we come in," said Bruno.
