Tueno earns sixth player of the week award

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After leading the 17th-ranked Lycoming College men's soccer team to a pair of wins with his defensive play plus a thrilling game-winning goal, senior Sainclair Tueno (Silver Spring, Md./ Montgomery Blair) was named the MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career, the conference office in Annville, Pa., announced on Monday, Oct. 8.

Tueno has won a school-record six conference player of the week awards, winning the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week award twice after being named the MAC Commonwealth Championship MVP in 2015 and 2017. He won two offensive player of the week awards in 2017 on Sept. 8 and Oct. 2, and he also won the defensive player of the week award on Sept. 26, 2016.

With the award this week, he surpassed former teammates, Abdullahi Abdi '18 and Kyle Thomas '18, for the school record of player of the week recognistions, as Abdi earned the offensive award and Thomas the defense award five times.

He is one of only two Warriors to win both the offensive and defensive awards in his career along with assistant coach Bill Kerr, and he is the only one to win the awards at least twice each.

Tueno scored the game-winning goal with 10.3 seconds left in regulation of a 1-0 victory over Stevenson. Senior Jake Webb (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) sent a cross into the box off a free kick that found Tueno, who soared up-and-over the defense to head in the goal, his second of the season.

However, it was his play as the team's center back that stood out, as Tueno anchored a defense that allowed just 19 shots in a pair of wins last week against teams with a combined 12-6-2 record. The Warrior defense allowed eight shots in a 2-1 win over Moravian and followed that up by allowing 11 in the 1-0 win over Stevenson.

The Warriors (10-1-1 overall, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth), winners of eight straight, have now combined to win four conference player of the week awards this season, three on defense and one on offense. Tueno joins senior Chris Solecki (Hainesport, Pa./Lenape) on the defensive end, who has brought home the award twice this year. Freshman Colin Wieand (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) has also won the offensive player of the week award once.

The Warriors are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 9 for a 4 p.m. start when they host MAC Commonwealth opponent Alvernia at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
