People might assume that the first time Matthew McConaughey graced Hollywood was in his iconic role of David Wooderson in Dazed and Confused. It turns out, die-hard fans of Unsolved Mysteries (the current iteration is streaming now on Netflix) might have had an easter egg that the world is just now discovering—McConaughey made his debut on the show, re-enacting a segment about a murder victim.

In an episode that dates back to 1992, an up-and-coming McConaughey (and his ripped physique) portrayed Larry, an ex-marine who was also a young father. While he spent some time mowing his mother’s lawn, a sexual predator who was on the run for murder (and weirdly nude in some form or another) drives up and exits his truck, heading towards the group of children who were playing outside.

Being the ever-so brave hero he usually portrays, McConaughey’s character chose to take the perpetrator’s car keys and try to keep him in one place before any authorities could arrive at the scene. Unfortunately, but on-brand with the iconic true crime show, Larry’s turn at trying to be a local hero got him shot multiple times and killed.

Although people might not be familiar with McConaughey’s first stint in Hollywood, it’s clear he remembers his time on the series—and the subsequent arrest made almost two weeks after the episode aired.

“I was the guy who got shot while mowing my mother’s grass,” he told IMDB about his time working on the show. “Somebody had seen the episode I was in and made a call, and they caught the guy eleven days later.”

Who knew that McConaughey was the key to solving a real-life criminal case?

And if you’re curious to see some older episodes (including ones that feature Robert Stack as the host), you can watch it on either Amazon Prime or Hulu. In the meantime, watch the newest reboot of the series on Netflix—Hollywood’s next A-lister could be gracing our screens, and we wouldn’t even know it.
