The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra is returning to Point Stadium for the annual July 4th celebration.

It will be the first Independence Day performance for James Blachly, who just finished his first season as the orchestra’s new music director.

“I’m most looking forward to the reaction from the crowd. Getting to perform our music for 5K people in Point Stadium,” Blachly said.

The concert and fireworks show were canceled last year. Blachly said the symphony orchestra and its sponsors worked hard to bring it back this year. The concert has been a tradition since 1989 for both the symphony and people in the region.

“The same people seem to come back year after year. They bring their children. College kids home on vacation come out for this concert,” said Mike Walther, the executive director of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra.

Orchestra leaders said this year’s performance will blend traditional songs with new music.

“Some of the same pieces, and some that are new to everybody that people won’t have heard before,” said Blachly.

Blachly hopes the performance will pay tribute to the country and the people of Johnstown.

“This is a celebration not only of our country’s independence but also of this region and what makes this city great. The city and the people,” said Blachly.

The concert and fireworks show are free to attend. Point Stadium doors open at 7pm on Tuesday, July 4th. The concert starts at 8pm.
