Local events to commemorate 9/11

Tuesday marks the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists used hijacked planes to crash into the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.

Several local events today will remember the almost 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks.

All events are open to the public and free.


Ringing of the Bell Ceremony:

The South Bend Fire Department, in conjunction with Clay Fire Territory, Mishawaka Fire Department and the St. Joseph County Police Department will host a Day of Remembrance on Tuesday, September 11th at 9 a.m. at the Freedom Memorial "Standing Tall" in St. Patrick’s Park, at 50651 Laurel Road.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg along with Representatives from Senator Donnelly and Congresswoman Walorski’s office and other officials will say a few words about the tragic event in 2001.


St. Joseph County Miller’s Vets Military Honors Day:

Ceremony to honor deceased Veterans of St. Joseph County. Starts at 9:30AM on the St. Joseph County Courthouse steps.

Another ceremony at the Robert L. Miller, Sr. Veteran's Center on South Michigan Street at 11 A.M.


SJHS Remembers Lives Lost on Sept. 11:

Saint Joseph Health System hospital at 5215 Holy Cross Parkway, Mishawaka, will remember those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks at a special World Trade Center Memorial ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday in its lobby.

The ceremony also will honor local heroes who devote their lives to the protection and safety of our community.

After that, Mass will be celebrated in the hospital chapel.


The 9/11 Survivor Tree Memorial Service:

The 9/11 Survivor Tree Memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Concord Fire Station 1, 23625 County Road 18, Elkhart. Mayor Tim Neese, Mayor Jeremy Stutsman, of Goshen, U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, a representative from U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly’s office and others representing the police, fire, hospitals and schools will each receive a sapling of a Callery pear tree, the only tree that survived in the 9/11 rubble.

Beginning at 1:15 p.m., there will be a police escort of the trees from the 911 Dispatch Center, down U.S. 33 to the station.


17th Annual 9/11 Memorial at the Patriot Day Ceremony:

The Kosciusko County community is invited to come together and remember those lost in the attacks at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the 17th annual 9/11 Memorial at the Patriot Day Ceremony in front of Center Lake Pavilion, Warsaw.

Local emergency services personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty also will be remembered.


South Bend CTA 9/11 Prayer Service:

Local church brings together community to pray for our military, police, firefighters and dispatchers as memorial for September 11th.

Prayer service starts at 6:30 P.M.

Berrien County Strong- Community in Action Remembrance Ceremony:

The ceremony will take place at 201 E. Wall St . At Resilience Plaza across from Benton Harbor City Hall.

Ceremony starts at 12:15 and ends at 12:45

There will be local police and firemen attending, along with the Saint Joseph and Benton Harbor fire trucks crossing ladders with the American Flag.


Notre Dame 9/11 Never Forget Project:

The Notre Dame student club Young Americans for Freedom will hold its 9/11 Never Forget Project at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

There will be a memorial of 2,977 small flags honoring each of the 9/11 victims on the South Quad at the University of Notre Dame.
