Teenager dies from shark attack wounds while surfing with dad in WA

Police have confirmed a teenager has died in a shark attack while surfing off the south coast of Western Australia.

The girl, 17, was attacked by the shark near Esperance, on Easter Monday afternoon and later died from her injuries.

The teen from Mandurah (near Perth) was surfing with her father at Kelp Beds surf break near Wylie Bay while her mum and sisters watched from the beach.

The attack happened just before 4pm local time and the teen was rushed to Esperance hospital.

Seven News understands the victim's leg was badly mauled in the attack and she had lost a lot of blood.

The Department of Fisheries have confirmed they are assisting police following the incident.

Wylie Bay Beach has been closed until further notice. Surfers have been advised to avoid the area for the next 48 hours.

Authorities will be conducting beach patrols in the area from early Tuesday.
