Miller Elementary School teachers Kirsten Erbse and Frank McGourty have completed the teaching American history grant program through The Education Cooperative in Dedham.

This federally funded grant program immerses teachers in American history, working with partners such as Suffolk University, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the Massachusetts Historical Society.

In addition to completing a yearlong course, the teachers traveled to Gettysburg, Pa., and Washington, D.C., in July for a weeklong intensive course focused on the Civil War. They worked closely with educators at sites such as Harper's Ferry National Historic Park in West Virginia and the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C. The teachers earned graduate credits, received resources for their classrooms, and worked collaboratively with teachers from other districts. They were among 35 teachers selected via a competitive application process.

The Education Cooperative is a collaborative of public schools that include Canton, Dedham, Dover, Dover-Sherborn, Framingham, Holliston, Hopkinton, Medfield, Millis, Natick, Needham, Norwood, Walpole, Wayland and Westwood districts.
