Lancaster gleaning

The Lancaster County Gleaning Project is looking for volunteers to help with its mission of reducing food waste and feeding those in need.

The volunteer group is affiliated with the Society of St. Andrew, a nationally registered nonprofit with more than 35 years of gleaning experience.

The local group works with Lancaster County farmers to glean produce such as corn, tomatoes, squash, peppers, potatoes and apples. The volunteers then deliver the produce to agencies that serve and feed the needy in Lancaster County. They typically glean for three to four hours on Saturday mornings, but also sometimes on weekdays.

In 2017, they gleaned 9 tons of produce from 28 farms, and almost 5 tons more from a greenhouse, frozen food and a caterer.

Anyone interested in volunteering should email lancastercountygleaning project@gmail.com or visit the group’s Facebook page, “Lancaster County Gleaning Project.”
