Montserrat College of Art Board of Trustees Adds Four New Members

BEVERLY – Four creative, accomplished community members have been added to the Montserrat College of Art Board of Trustees recently. They were named to three-year terms to guide the four-year arts college into its 50th anniversary in 2020.

The four are Selvin L. Chambers III, Bonnie Henry, Tim Johnson, and Barbara Schaye.

“The collective strength of our Board of Trustees has been increased by the presence of these talented individuals,” said President Kurt T. Steinberg. “The College and our students will benefit greatly from their unique experience, and deep professional skills. I am proud to begin my tenure at Montserrat with these outstanding Trustees.”

Selvin Chambers’ experience includes more than 15 years in non-profit and local government work and extensive business development experience in the non-profit sector. He has a passion for engaging local communities and building and supporting community-based programs and collaborations serving a broad spectrum of youth and young adults. Chambers most recently served as the executive director of Root NS since 2016, a non-profit culinary arts social enterprise. A graduate of Fitchburg State University with a bachelor's degree in Sociology, he holds a Certificate in Non-Profit Management from the Boston University School of Management and Certificate in Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management from Harvard Business School.

“I am so excited and pleased to serve as a member of the Montserrat Board of Trustees,” Chambers said. “I believe in its mission and its core values of developing leaders to serve by using their creative talents.”

Bonnie Henry is an accomplished senior executive, entrepreneur, and board member with more than 38 years of success across multiple industries, including grocery, food service, and specialty foods, consumer packaged goods, healthcare, and management consulting.

She holds an MBA in Management & Labor Relations from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and a BS/BA in Business & Communications from the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh. She has served as chair of the board of GF Solutions and Hellas Int'l, and as a board member for multiple companies as well as leadership roles at angel investing groups. Henry’s interest in the Fine Arts started with her mother and she continued to pass this interest onto her children who all pursued the arts in some fashion including her daughter, Kat, who participated in a summer drawing program at Montserrat.

“I am excited to serve as a trustee for Monserrat,” Henry said. “The college is uniquely positioned to develop artistic leaders and entrepreneurs for our communities - locally and across the country. I look forward to preserving and growing this legacy.”

Dr. Timothy M. Johnson is Head of School at Pingree School in South Hamilton, where he continues to transform its academic program, revitalize admissions efforts, and renovate facilities to ensure future excellence which includes the opening of an arts wing and athletics center in 2014. His vast experience includes serving in various leadership roles at Springside Chesnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. Dr. Johnson also taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News, VA.

He graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College with a degree in Studio Art and Art History. He received his MFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2001 and his Doctorate of Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. He is an accomplished artist who has participated in numerous juried exhibitions in Virginia, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. He lives in South Hamilton with his wife, Jennifer Groeber, who is also an established artist and educator, and their four children, Cabot, Jasper, Mica, and Reid.

“Montserrat's mission to develop in its students the habits of mind to build lives of creative enterprise and community engagement is vital,” Johnson said. “As an educator, artist, and passionate citizen of the North Shore, I am thrilled to further this mission as a member of the board of trustees.”

Barbara Schaye’s experience stems from her unique background including teaching English literature and writing as a high school English teacher as well as serving as a “Stewardess” for Pan American airlines traveling the world. Schaye was one of the first women in the field of Institutional Equity Research Sales covering investment departments of major banks, insurance companies including mutual fund portfolio managers and security analysts who purchased stock and economic research from the firms she represented. Schaye transformed this skill to become a Senior Vice President in Wealth Management to structure portfolios for individuals and large family offices.

Her extensive list of local volunteer activities include serving on various boards as well as serving as an overseer for the Peabody Essex Museum. She remains active on local boards and athletic and literary hobbies. Schaye lives in Marblehead with her husband, Jim and their three dogs.

Montserrat College of Art is a private, residential college of visual art and design supporting the creative life by educating artists and entrepreneurs for a rapidly changing world.
