Beijing has set new standards for public toilets, including a rule that they should not contain more than two flies.
The two-fly limit is one of a series of measures aimed at improving toilets in the capital.
The new standards also detail how smelly a lavatory should be. They also cover cleaning, the use of equipment and training for attendants.
The Beijing Times reports the new standards also require signs in both Chinese and English to be installed in the toilets.
In a statement, the Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment said that the regulations aimed to standardise toilet management at places such as parks, railway stations, hospitals and shopping malls.
Many people who live in the city's old neighbourhood do not have a toilet and have to use public conveniences.
