JUSTICE, IL -- A Roberts Park firefighter remains in critical condition after he was injured battling on house fire in Justice on Wednesday. The injured firefighter, said to be a lieutenant, is being treated at Loyola University Medical Center. Firefighters from several suburban departments fought the blaze in frigid temperatures.

The fire started Wednesday morning in the 8000 block of West Fawn Trail in Justice. Fire crews from the Roberts Park Fire Protection District and Bridgeview worked on the fire that reportedly started in the home’s lower level and then quickly spread to the upper floors, the homeowner told Southtown. Family members were able to escape uninjured with their dogs.

The Roberts Park firefighter is currently in Loyola’s ICU burn unit. A fire official on the scene said the cold weather was “rough on the crews.” While the cause of the fire is unknown, a preliminary investigation has revealed that the fire may have been started by the family dog chewing on some wires, according to WGN News. The Roberts Park Fire Protection District serves Hickory Hills, Justice and unincorporated Cook County.
