A wrap-up of Friday’s High School football stories, scores and video from the first round of the CIF Southern Section high school football playoffs for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star-news and Whittier Daily News.
Saturday Morning Quarterback: Pasadena stuns No. 2 Santa Paula for upset of the night: It didn’t sit right with a lot of area observers last week when Pasadena, fresh off a loss to rival Muir, was given an at-large berth into the CIF Southern Section Division 11 playoffs after finishing in fifth place in the Pacific League. Well, how’s it sitting now? The Bulldogs posted one of the more improbable upsets of the night be stunning No. 2-seed Santa Paula with a 33-22 win. And now Pasadena’s season continues with a quarterfinals game next week.
La Serna football cruises into quarterfinals past Colony: With a dominating performance on defense, La Serna High cruised to a 38-8 victory over visiting Colony in a CIF Southern Section Division 5 first-round game Friday night at Cal High. The Lancers (10-1), ranked No. 7 in the division, had a shutout until the last minute of the game, when Colony quarterback Joseph Tesimale scored on a 6-yard run.
Mission Viejo sends Bishop Amat home in first round for third straight year: Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty said that outside the CIF Southern Section’s big three of Mater Dei, Corona Centennial and St. John Bosco that have dominated Division 1 in recent years that Mission Viejo is as close as it gets to being that fourth heavyweight. You’ll get no arguments from anyone who witnessed Mission Viejo’s 24-7 victory over Bishop Amat on Friday that sent the Lancers home in the first round for the third consecutive year.
Notre Dame fumble leads to game winner in final seconds, knocks out La Habra: Sherman Oaks Notre Dame’s defense forced three second half La Habra (7-4) turnovers, but it was a recovery of their own fumble that proved to be the difference in a wild 41-34 victory in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.
Arcadia football delivers birthday victory for coach over Agoura: The Arcadia High football team delivered a big birthday present to coach Andrew Policky by continuing to dominate the way it’s been doing the past several weeks. Arcadia jumped on Agoura early and often as the Apaches romped to a 56-7 first-round CIF Southern Section Division 8 playoff game Friday night.
San Marino football gets defensive to hold off Segerstrom: On most nights San Marino’s Beau Hobbie is the focus in a San Marino football victory. On Friday night, it was the Titans defense that decided to steal the thunder. Despite losing quarterback Kade Wentz to a shoulder injury in the second quarter, the Titans (9-1-1) defense did just enough to hold off Segerstrom, 21-20, in a CIF Southern Section Division 9 first-round game. The Titans will have a road game against North Torrance next Friday night.
Aquinas football gets 10th straight victory, bouncing Los Altos from playoffs: Make it 10 straight wins for top-seeded Aquinas High School, counting Friday night’s 48-7 CIF-SS Division 5 playoff victory over visiting Los Altos. The defending Division 9 champion Falcons’ defense made turnovers, sacks and even a special teams recovery count against the visiting Conquerors (4-7). Surrendering just 126 total yards was another bonus.
Xzavier Ford’s 5-TD and 298-yard rushing effort lifts Glendora football over Burbank: Burbank coach Adam Colman figured the Bulldogs would have a hard time stopping a Tartans rushing attack led by a stout offensive line Friday night in their CIF-SS Division 5 first-round game at Citrus College. The Tartans (10-1) knew their big men up front gave them an advantage against a smaller Burbank (7-4) team, and all they had to worry about was taking care of what they could control.
Bonita football scores 38 straight points to leave Rancho Christian reeling: Bonita High didn’t allow Rancho Christian’s first-quarter trick plays alter its game plan as the Bearcats defeated the Eagles 54-20 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 10 playoffs Friday night.
Top-seed Northview advances with rout over Santa Ynez: Top-seed Northview High School scored on its first possession of the game and never looked back as it beat Santa Ynez 43-7 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 7 first-round game on Friday night. The Vikings (11-0) advanced to the quarterfinals and will host Warren next Friday at 7 pm at Covina District Field.
