A ceremony to honor Hmong-Lao veterans who served during the Vietnam war will be held Saturday. At the dedication ceremony, a monument will be unveiled to recognize and pay tribute to Hmong soldiers.

The Hmong soldiers main role during this war was to rescue American down pilots and fought as secret soldiers.

"Their story wasn't told for a long time," said Kham Yang, the Hmong American Center Board President. "In the early 80's and 90's nobody knew why the Hmong people were in the United States. We feel it is time they get the recognition they deserve.

Marathon County Board Chairman Kurt Gibbs says it's something needed in the area.

"It recognizes that diversity," said Gibbs. "And the diversity that the Hmong people have brought to Marathon County ans we embrace that community."

In a city that is home to the second largest Hmong population in the state, having the memorial in Wausau is special.

"It's very fitting that we have the monument in Wausau here to show the appreciation we have for those veterans who contributed to the United States," said Yang.

If you would like to attend the event please head to the Marathon County Courthouse Saturday at 10 a.m.
