More than a quarter of the way through the season, The Athletic spoke to assistant coach Ime Udoka to discuss the state of the Spurs, their problems on defense, what issues need addressing and more. What do you see from this team after more than 20 games? Ime Udoka: A bunch of new guys that are figuring it out as we go. They’re learning about them, and they are learning about what we want. It’s been some inconsistency, but they are giving effort and trying to figure out a new system. Obviously with DeMar coming over, what we do defensively is totally different from what he’s done his whole career. Guys are picking it up, but guys have been in and out of the lineup also. Pau [Gasol] being out, Rudy [Gay] being out. Dejounte [Murray] suffered an unexpected injury. So, some inconsistency but it’s expected with a new group and some injuries we’ve had.
