WEST HAVEN (Vt.) - Five members of a Stafford family were hospitalized, including the two parents, who suffered serious injuries, after their minivan and a sedan collided on a Vermont highway , police said.

Police determined that a 2013 BMW 328 was traveling north on Route 22A in West Haven, a rural town near the New York border, on Sunday when it veered out of its lane and collided partially head-on with a 2012 Toyota Sienna traveling south, according to a news release from Vermont State Police Trooper Katrina R. Ducharme.

Both vehicles were totaled, Ducharme said.

The driver of the BMW — 20-year-old Jenna Latterreur of Essex, Vermont — was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All five people in the Toyota were also taken to the hospital. The driver of the minivan Greg Smith, 38, of the Manahawkin section of Stafford, had to be pulled from the vehicle by first responders and was taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland City.

His wife, 41-year-old Holly Smith, who was seated in the front passenger seat, also suffered serious injuries and was taken to University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, police said.

A Vermont State Police vehicle is parked at the Williston barracks in Willison.

The couple's 11-year-old daughter and their two sons, ages 9 and 6, were also taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center with injuries described as minor and non-life-threatening, according to the news release.

Police said Wednesday that the victims were reported to be in stable condition.

Latterreur has been charged with gross negligent operation and reckless endangerment. She was issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court in November, police said.
