A sample of mosquitoes trapped in an area near Brushy Creek Road west of Parmer Lane in Cedar Park has tested positive for West Nile virus, the city said in a news release. The sample was collected Thursday.

City officials are urging area residents to be extra vigilant, and to take proactive measures to prevent mosquito bites, especially during rainy weather.

A sampling at an expanded trapping site at Lakeline Boulevard and Cypress Creek Road on Thursday has tested negative, the release said. It said Cedar Park has been working to drain and treat standing water from the rain this week. Mosquitoes cannot breed without standing water.

The species of mosquito trapped, known as the southern house mosquito, has a flight range of one mile.

There are no human cases of West Nile virus currently reported in Cedar Park.

The Williiamson County and Cities Health District has four traps in Cedar Park to capture mosquitoes. Any time there is a positive result, the health district does expanded trapping at 10 additional locations, the release said.

The city received its first positive result for West Nile virus from a trap in August. It also received positive results from traps in September and early October, the release said.
