Eagles News: Brad Childress believes Carson Wentz is the future of the NFL

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 8/25/16.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Let's get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Spread Awakening - The Ringer
Childress, meanwhile, believes the current holy grail is the prospect who ran spread plays at the college level that can be easily imported to the pro level. He mentioned Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz, who at North Dakota State played in a multiple-style offense that incorporated spread concepts. Childress was impressed that Wentz played under center sometimes and in the shotgun at other times, and that regardless of the formation, he was adept at making various throws. He said some of the sweep plays Wentz ran were particularly impressive, and that he wants to incorporate what he saw into the Chiefs’ game plan.

Lane Johnson Getting ‘More Pissed Off Each Day’ - Birds 24/7
Two weeks after the news leaked about Lane Johnson’s impending suspension, the Eagles’ right tackle still faces much uncertainty. He doesn’t know when he’ll receive the results of his B sample, when he may potentially be banned for 10 games and when he could appeal if he suspended. He’s been given no timeline, and he’s unsure of how long the appeals process would take. That uncertain future, Johnson says, is what’s irritated him the most over the past few weeks. “I just get a little bit more pissed off each day, to be honest. That’s where I’m at right now,” Johnson said. “It’s just been frustrating. You come in, want to have a good season and shit hits the fan again. Got to go through this stuff all over again. It’s just been more mentally frustrating, hard to concentrate on what you need to concentrate on.”

Quick transition: While trying to learn playbook, Green-Beckham will get time with starters - PhillyVoice
“We’re not moving him around,” Doug Pederson said. “So he’s lining up in one spot, one position, which is good for him right now. He’s playing fast, and that’s what we ask him to do, and he’s being decisive with his routes. He’s such a big body that covering guys up in the run game will be a big benefit as well.”

Game Review – PS2 – PHI 17, PIT 0 – Offense - Iggles Blitz
To be fair, it is hard for an offense to come together quickly with so much change. Andy Reid’s Eagles scored 29 points in their first 3 preseason games and I’m not even sure how the D and STs affected that total. Doug Pederson has more talent to work with, but this isn’t a dynamic bunch. They did improve in just about every area from the first game to the second. The biggest jump was with the blocking. Jason Peters returned to the starting lineup, which pushed Matt Tobin to backup LT. Those moves improved both lines and settled things down in a big way. With functional blocking (or better), QBs had time to drop back and read the defense. Receivers had time to get open (or at least try).

Domo: Smallwood could give Eagles' run game a boost - Daily News
With the Sept. 11 season opener against Cleveland just 2 1/2 weeks away, their top three running backs currently are a guy who has averaged only nine carries a game the last two years and has managed to play a full season only once in his career (Ryan Mathews), an undersized 33-year-old guy who is expected to be used a lot more as a pass-catcher than as a runner (Darren Sproles), and another little guy with a grand total of 34 career carries (Kenjon Barner). Doug Pederson's go-to response when he's asked whether he can win with this group of running backs is to reference last year's Kansas City Chiefs, who finished sixth in the league in rushing and third in yards per attempt with no-names Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware lugging the ball after Jamaal Charles got hurt in the fifth game of the season. Before last season, West and Ware had three combined NFL rushing attempts.

Zach Ertz fires back at Josh Norman, defends Sam Bradford - NJ.com
On Wednesday, tight end Zach Ertz defended Bradford and took a nice little shot at Norman. "I think everyone is excited to see him play in a new scheme," Ertz said. "Whether it is going to be beneficial or detrimental."

How Jim Schwartz changed Stephen Tulloch's career - CSN Philly
“So in 2006, I go to the NFL combine. I measure in at 5-10 and some change, whatever I was. It was the second day of the draft and [the Titans] were about to draft a guy from another school, so Coach Schwartz goes into (Jeff) Fisher’s office and makes a little tape of my highlights from college, and (former Titans linebackers coach) Dave McGinnis at the time. He changed Coach Fisher’s mind and Floyd Reese at the time was the general manager. I was the 116th pick in the [2006] draft. That was it. I came to Tennessee and the rest was history.”

Big Week Ahead For Dorial Green-Beckham? - PE.com
Dorial Green-Beckham grabbed what he could when the news came that the Eagles and Tennessee Titans announced a trade that sent Green-Beckham to Philadelphia. “Workout clothes pretty much,” Green-Beckham said. “That’s pretty much all I’ve got." …

Kirk Cousins is Ready for His Prove-It Season ... Again - The MMQB
The Seahawks landed Russell Wilson in the third year of the Pete Carroll/John Schneider Era as a result of a keep-throwing-darts-at-the-board approach. Seattle went through Matt Hasselbeck, Tarvaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst and Matt Flynn before landing their franchise cornerstone in the third round of the 2012 draft. I raised that method to Eagles coach Doug Pederson the other day, and it jogged some memories of that draft for him. It was Andy Reid’s final one in Philly, and Pederson was his quarterbacks coach. “If we’d have drafted Russell Wilson in 2012, we’d still be here as coaches,” Pederson said, with a smile.

The Chargers want you to think they’re the good guys in the Joey Bosa standoff - SB Nation
As Joey Bosa’s holdout continues, the San Diego Chargers have issued a statement making it clear that the two parties are not any nearer to an agreement. The team has said that its most recent offer to Bosa was its best offer, but that it will be restructured as it is clear to the Chargers that their first-round pick will not play an entire 16-game season this year.
