Ugaste wins 65th state House seat

Republican Dan Ugaste of Geneva will be the next state House District 65 representative.

He defeated Richard Johnson of Elgin 25,201 votes to 22,879, according to unofficial results Tuesday night.

Current state Rep. Steven Andersson, a Geneva Republican, did not seek re-election.

The area has been served by Republicans for many years.

Ugaste opposes changing Illinois' income tax from a flat rate to a graduated system.

He also called for business-friendlier changes in workers' compensation laws, which he said would attract more businesses to the state. Ugaste is a worker compensation lawyer.

Johnson, a teacher, favored a graduated income tax, but only if the residents of the district would not end up paying more.

The 65th District includes parts of Geneva, St. Charles, Campton Hills, Plato Center, South Elgin, Elgin, Hampshire and Huntley.
