Governor Phil Scott has submitted a Public Assistance disaster declaration request to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to get help paying for severe storm damage repairs in seven counties.

According to Scott’s office, damage from the June 29–July 1 severe storms qualifies Addison, Bennington, Caledonia, Orange, Rutland, Washington and Windsor counties for federal disaster funds.

The funding request process was started earlier this month when Scott requested a FEMA assessment of the damage.

Officials said that since the Preliminary Damage Assessment started on July 12, FEMA has found $4.7 million of public infrastructure damage. Only $1 million of damage was needed for the state to be considered for a Public Assistance disaster declaration.

“I commend state and town road crews for their hard work on repairs to ensure safe passage for Vermonters and visitors. The bill for that work will be significant and, in many cases, would be detrimental to annual public works budgets. This storm has clearly placed a financial burden on towns and a federal disaster declaration is warranted,” Governor Phil Scott said.

According to the governor’s office, FEMA will review Scott’s request and then send it with a recommendation to President Donald Trump.

If the president approves the request, the seven counties would get reimbursed for 75% of storm response and recovery costs.
