Newton Highlands Just Got A New Restaurant

Buttonwood just opened in Newton Highlands and it's creating a bit of buzz.

NEWTON, MA — Newton just got a new restaurant. Dave Punch and Shane Smyth who own Sycamore and Little Big Diner opened Buttonwood on Jan. 9 and it's creating a bit of buzz.

The restaurant billed as a neighborhood joint is located in the former 51 Lincoln restaurant space, which was left empty in 2016 when Chef Jeff Fournier closed up shop. The space has been updated, but isn't unrecognizable.

If you like Sycamore in Newton Centre, Buttonwood will feel familiar but more of a family-friendly spot. From the website:

A casual, family-friendly neighborhood eatery in Newton Highlands brought to you by the same team as Sycamore and Little Big Diner. Enjoy a warm welcome with your friends and neighbors for nightly dinner service and a full bar with local beers, craft cocktails and small-production wines. Walk-ins and reservations are accommodated, and we look forward to meeting you!

The current dinner menu includes Mushroom Conserva for $8 and Roasted Garlic and White Bean for $4 served with a baguette.

Starters range from $9 (Anson Mills Farro and Parsnip Soup with Pancetta and herb pistou) to $15 (Crispy Pork Ribs with honey za’atar glaze & labne). Mains dishes range from the burger ($15) to a Portuguese Fish Stew with monkfsh, littleneck clams, potatoes, escarole, aioli ($27).

There's a grilled a la cart section which ranges from the $18 10 oz Flank Steak with chimichurri to the a lamb dish or shrimp to the most expensive item on their menu at $44, a 20 oz Bone-in NY Strip with marrow horseradish butter. Then there are some charming sides, like the french fries with roasted garlic aoli for $6 and the Root Vegetable Au Gratin ($8) or the Cast Iron Cornbread ($6)

Francisco Millan formerly of Row 34, and Island Creek Oysters, is chef de cuisine. Julia Bailey and Matt O’Keefe are the general managers.

Buttonwood's hours:

  • 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday,
  • 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday,
  • 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday,

The bar is open until midnight Monday through Saturday and until 11 p.m. Sunday.
