Championship Saturday at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines saw Iowa girls' state soccer titles claimed by the top-ranked teams in all three classes. Davenport Assumption and Lewis Central completed three-peats, while Ankeny Centennial won its second championship in three years.
Class 1A: No. 1 Davenport Assumption 8, No. 9 Sioux City Heelan 0
Assumption scored five goals in the first half and cruised to its third straight state title and sixth in the last seven years. Assumption is now tied with Cedar Rapids Xavier for the most championships in state history with nine.
The Knights (18-2) smashed a state tournament record with 21 goals across their three wins this week. Denver commit Molly Gervase notched a first-half hat trick and was named captain of the all-tournament team. Carly King and Livy Lansing each scored twice and Sully Kelly finished the scoring.
Heelan's eight-game win streak was snapped. The Crusaders finished 13-8
Class 2A: No. 1 Lewis Central 1, No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock 0
Alissa Pomrenke scored in the 37th minute, Madison Parks made four second-half saves and Lewis Central won its third straight state championship.
The Titans (18-3) did not give up a goal in their five postseason games, outscoring opponents 24-0, including 5-0 at state.
Waverly-Shell Rock (20-1) was the last unbeaten team in Iowa this season.
Class 3A: No. 1 Ankeny Centennial 3, No. 2 Ankeny 2
Ankeny Centennial prevailed in the first girls' state soccer championship matching up teams from the same city.
All five goals were scored in the first half as the Jaguars (20-2) held on for their second title in three years.
Ankeny (19-3), which won the 2011, 2013 and 2015 big-school crowns, struck first via Morgan Bennett in the fifth minute. Megan Gray tied it with a PK and Kenzie Geiger put Centennial up 2-1 in the 13th minute.
After the Hawkettes got even with Alexis Legg's 22nd-minute goal, Olivia Brown's header put the Jaguars back in front less than four minutes later.
Centennial also won the regular-season meeting, 3-2 (4-3 PK) on May 1.
