Mets making progress on catching situation, still interested in Pollock

After a week at the Winter Meetings chock full of J.T. Realmuto rumors, we are finally hearing murmurs of something different on the catching front. Andy Martino of SNY reports that the Mets’ catching situation is “moving closer to resolution” and that he is hearing a lot about their interest in Yasmani Grandal, which is “very serious.”

This doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ve closed the door on Realmuto, however. The Mets remain interested, but as the Winter Meetings drew to a close, talks with the Marlins about Realmuto appeared to have stalled, with the asking price remaining high. As recently as yesterday, new three-team rumors involving Noah Syndergaard emerged, this time involving the Padres. But Brodie Van Wagenen appears to be exploring all of his options at the catching position and Grandal appears to be the flavor of the moment.

Martino also reports that the Mets are still very interested in A.J. Pollock, even as they weigh their catching options, indicating that perhaps a Grandal signing would not necessarily rule out the acquisition of a major free agent for the outfield.
