James William Hudson Jr. EAST CALAIS - James William "Bill" Hudson Jr., 88, of East Calais, Vermont, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, at his home. He was born in Plainfield, Vermont, on Aug. 15, 1930, the son of James William Hudson Sr. and Dorothy Raymond Hudson. He went thru school in Plainfield and graduated from Plainfield Hugh School in 1948. On Sept. 29, 1950, he married Muriel Shatney in Woodbury, Vermont. He joined National Life Insurance Co. and worked there for 38 years, retiring in 1989. He entered the U.S. Army in February 1952 during the Korean War, for two years. He was discharged in January 1954 after a tour of duty in Germany. Bill’s love of sports kept him very active. He was a basketball official for over 25 years. He coached basketball and baseball in East Calais as his children were growing up and in later years, he traveled with the U-32 basketball team as scorekeeper. He ushered and kept score for the Barre tournaments. He was an original member of the Calais Recreation Association and worked for many years on the July 4th celebration. In later years, he enjoyed a good game of golf with his sons and grandson and many friends in Vermont and Florida. He was a member of the East Calais Union Church. Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years and his three children Rickie Hudson and wife Joan, of Glover, Michele Bailey and husband Kevin, of East Calais, Christopher Hudson and wife Melody, of East Calais; three grandsons Bret Hudson and wife Kristina, Chase and Caiden Hudson, all of East Calais, and one great-granddaughter, Mia; also, brothers Bruce Hudson and wife Ruth, of Maine, Douglas Hudson and wife Romona, of East Calais, Dan Hudson and wife Sue, of Hardwick, Ronald Raymond and wife Judy, of Barre; sisters Cynthia Wilkerson and husband Don, of Virginia, Darlene Clark and husband Keith, of Barre, Wendy Kuncz and husband John, of Williamstown; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Terry Hudson; and sister, Connie Goslant. Bill had three great loves in his life, his wife, his family and golf. Calling hours will be Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hooker & Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, Vermont. Donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Calais Recreation Association.
