Monday’s regional sports roundup: William and Mary’s Connor Burchfield named CAA men’s basketball Co-Player of the Week

Men’s basketball:

William and Mary senior Connor Burchfield earned Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week honors.

Burchfield, who averaged 28.5 points, three rebounds, two assists and 1.5 steals per game in two games last week, set a program and CAA record with 10 3-pointers in the Tribe’s 114-104 win over Marshall on Wednesday.

Burchfield, who shared the weekly award with Drexel’s Tramaine Isabell, added 27 points in W&M’s 108-85 win over Savannah State on Saturday. …

Georgie Pacheco Ortiz scored six of his eight points in overtime, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, to give Liberty a 77-74 win at Georgia State in Atlanta.

Scottie James led the Flames (6-3) with 17 points. D’Marcus Simonds led the Panthers (5-3) with 35 points.

Women’s basketball:

Tyler Scaife scored a team-high 22 points to lead Rutgers past Virginia 52-43 in Piscataway, N.J. The Scarlet Knights improved to 8-2.

Jocelyn Willoughby scored 14 points and J’Kyra Brown scored 13 for the Cavaliers (4-6), who got within three points in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 11. …

Chowan (7-1) moved up one spot to No. 9 in the latest Division II Atlantic Regional poll. The Hawks beat Francis Marion 80-75 last week. The Patriots were ranked fifth in the Southeast Regional poll. …

Radford senior Janayla White was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week and Liberty’s Ashtyn Baker was named the conference Freshman of the Week..

White had 15 points and 12 rebounds in the Highlanders’ 56-53 win over UNC Greensboro on Tuesday and posted 13 points and 14 rebounds in Radford’s 68-42 loss at Virginia Tech on Sunday.

Baker had eight points and two steals in the Flames’ win over Division II Limestone on Tuesday and added 11 points and three steals in Liberty’s 61-40 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday.

Football:

Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl in January.

Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta, the CAA Offensive Player of the Year, is among the other quarterbacks expected to play.

Baseball:

Norfolk State interim head coach Keith Shumate announced his team’s upcoming schedule, a 51-game slate that includes 29 home games and seven contests against in-state opponents.

The Spartans, who will host 15 of their first 17 games at Marty L. Miller Field, will open the season with a three-game series against Villanova Feb. 16-18.

Wrestling:

Apprentice finished sixth out of 16 teams in the Ted Reese Invitational over the weekend at the University of Maine.

Sophomore Colton Messick (from Warwick High) led the Builders with a second-place finish at 125 pounds. …

Smithfield High graduate Chuck Sharon, who wrestles for NAIA power Campbellsville (Ky.), garnered Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week accolades for the first time this season and fourth time in his career.

In his second tournament of the season, Sharon went 4-0 at the Ohio Northern University Invitational to win the 184-pound class. He beat wrestlers from Ohio Northern, Alma, Olivet and Tiffin.
