Sled dog racing: Redington in 24th place in Iditarod

Musher Ryan Redington was running in 24th place Friday night in Alaska's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Redington, this year's John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon champion, reached the Shageluk checkpoint - 487 miles into the nearly 1,000-mile race from Fairbanks to Nome - at 2:11 p.m. Alaska time Friday. He and his team have completed their mandatory 24-hour rest.

Redington is a native of Alaska who also trains in Northwestern Wisconsin.

From Shageluk, mushers and their teams faced a relatively short 25-mile run to the next checkpoint in Anvik.

Three-time defending champion Mitch Seavey of Seward, Alaska, was leading the race as of Friday night; he reached the Grayling checkpoint - 18 miles past Anvik - at 1:45 p.m. Alaska time Friday. He was followed 13 minutes later by Norwegian musher Joar Leifseth Ulsom.

Two other mushers with Northland ties, Port Wing natives Anna and Kristy Berington, were running in 31st and 36th place, respectively, as of Friday night.

The race started Monday in Willow, Alaska. Sixty-four of the 67 mushers who started the race remained on the trail Friday.
