L.A. County deputy arrested on DUI charge in crash that damaged several cars
An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on suspicion of drunk-driving after crashing his pickup truck into several parked vehicles in Palmdale.
Nicholas Smith, 24, was driving on a residential street at 2:45 a.m. Sunday when his Chevrolet Colorado drifted to the right and collided with five parked vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Smith, who had served as a deputy for six months, was relieved of his duties with pay a few hours after his arrest, said department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida.
No one was injured in the crash.
Smith, of Palmdale, waited for emergency personnel to arrive at the scene on 30th Street East, just north of Avenue Q-6, the CHP said. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.
Smith was booked into the sheriff’s station in Palmdale and was released Sunday afternoon in lieu of $30,000 bail, according to inmate records.
