CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- 14 years ago Monday, Hurricane Charley made landfall in Southwest Florida, severely impacting people in Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte.
On August 13, 2004 – Friday the 13th -- Hurricane Charley made landfall on Captiva Island and moved into Charlotte County, causing $13 billion in damage in the Sunshine State.
It hit Southwest Florida as a Category 4 storm, with winds up to 150 miles per hour.
Well built homes were severely damaged, and power lines were down.
At the time, Charley was the strongest hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida in 1992.
