Sam Bradford’s Quick Decision-Making, Plus Strong, Accurate Arm Attract Eagles

SamBradford2I know you might not be able to make any sense out of yesterday’s trade, which sent Nick Foles, the Eagles fourth round pick this year and their second round pick next year to St.  Louis for Sam Bradford and the Rams fifth round pick this year.  First remember that Chip Kelly was not in love with Nick Foles as a quarterback.

Kelly values the quarterback’s ability to make quick, correct decisions above everything else.  I stress the word quick.  I think Mark Sanchez did a better job of executing in the offense from a speed standpoint, than Foles.  I don’t think Kelly saw a future for Foles in his offense.

The next quality, which is stressed by Kelly, is the quarterback being able to throw the football accurately.  I’m starting to believe that Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur vouched for Sam Bradford’s ability as a decision-maker and as a passer.   I think that’s why the Birds made the deal.

I don’t like the fact that a lot of Eagles fans who weren’t in love with Foles are now upset that he’s been traded away.  Let’s be honest, there wasn’t a lot of love for Foles here in Philadelphia.  It was a lukewarm love even though he had a record-breaking season in 2013.

I think Chip Kelly and his staff didn’t believe in Foles’ ability to make quick decisions and throw the football accurately.  Add to that his inability to run and you have a quarterback that they didn’t believed fit in the system.  They saw him hold the football last year and they weren’t convinced he had the quick mind that’s needed to run Kelly’s uptempo offense.

Remember that Bradford ran an uptempo offense in college at Oklahoma.  He has a reputation for being very bright and he has a strong and accurate arm.  These are ingredients which Chip Kelly and Pat Shurmur value.  Those ingredients are part of what makes up Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning so special.

There is no question that Sam Bradford has the same pedigree of those franchise quarterbacks.  Remember, he was the first pick in the draft in 2010.

The big question mark about Bradford is his inability to stay healthy.  He has been a walking and talking injury report.  It’s too bad the Eagles can’t wrap him up in Bubble Wrap.

I think the Birds coaching staff must believe Bradford’s injuries had a lot to do with a poor offensive line in front of him.  He will play behind a very good offensive line here in Philadelphia, so they probably have reasoned that he can stay healthy here, if he gets the ball out of his hands quickly.

I think Kelly and his staff must have reasoned that they couldn’t win a championship with Foles.  They didn’t see any way they could move up in the draft far enough to get Marcus Mariota, so they decided to make the big gamble for a guy, who has franchise quarterback ability.  He can’t run anymore, but he can make quick decisions and he can throw the ball accurately.

Bradford is the only guy with franchise quarterback ability, who was available for the Birds.  Shurmur knows him very well.  He had to have given the thumbs up on Bradford.  Kelly must have reasoned that he was the only quarterback available, who had the special qualities necessary for operating his offense and winning a Super Bowl.

It’s a big gamble. The city of Philadelphia will be holding their breath every time Bradford is hit.

We’ll see how this turns out.

G– while i’m sour right now, very sour– the only hope we have is this guy in fact is smarter than the rest of us– that he brings bradford in to run a brady style offense, quick hits, surgical accuracy–speaking of surgical accuracy, lets hope the surgeons were accurate on his knee!

Lets hope Bradford can strap on that knee Brace and head out there and run the offence. If Sanchez has to come in…well….season over.

Hopefully Bradford can have some sort of rejuvenation with the Eagles.

When he hits the field in September, it’ll have been 23 months since his last NFL pass.

That being said….even if Bradford comes through, and I hope he does, that shouldn’t have paid what they did for the guy.

Only part of this trade I like is how silly it makes all the “Chip Kelly must have a mobile QB” people look.

The guys who looks silly are you Vinniedaloser and the Nick Foles Fetish crew.

Lets keep the record straight!

Look at the archives of my arguments about Nick Foles!

I consistently argued that his problem was not only was he so physically slow…my problem was that he was mentally slow!

So I wasn’t a part of any crowd saying that ONLY a mobile QB could play for Chip Kelly…I always said if you got Tom Brady or Peyton Manning mentally quick thinking QB’s they could always play

You were just crowing about the Eagles signing Nick Foles to a big long term contract like Colin Kaepernick….

DCar, you, Vinnie, haveablunt, mhenski, regal/deserteagle i’ve laid it out and made it clear…I’ve been consistent…I am a well-documented Nick Foles hater, and guess what…Chip Kelly is a Nick Foles hater too. He does not fit Chip Kelly’s offense and Chip got rid of his ass because he’s not good enough! Chip proved what I have been saying all along but its you fools who have reduced my arguments to your simpleton constructions about ‘Mike Vick’, and the mobility issue.

I have said over and over again…Nick Foles is not only physically slow but his biggest problem is that he was MENTALLY SLOW…he has trouble making quick, good decisions and as soon as the defense made some adjustments, we saw the real Nick Foles….throwing off of his back foot, holding the ball, missing wideopen receivers, indecisive, and nervous…
Chip Kelly’s press conference was very informative…if you can think a little bit he tells you openly and honestly what he wants and what he wasn’t getting from the QB.
He has said it over and over again
1. Quick, Good decisions with the Football
2. Accuracy with his passing
For Chip Kelly, its now real clear what he wasn’t getting from Foles…he makes it clear…Foles is not smart enough and accurate enough to run his system!

The reasction to this mess is what I think could end up being very interesting.

Philly Newspapers and Bleeding green both have “Do you approve” polls going and its about 10 “NO” to every 1 “YES” and that’s even after Kool, Songs and Jon “sources” Hart spent the entire night clicking “yes” over and over.

The Eagles twitter feed was inundated with comments that can best be summarized as, “This is fucing bulllllllshitt!!!!!!”

There are headlines in STL about how the Eagles were fleeced. NFL network talking heads universally agreed that STL won the trade.

Now Chip Kelly might not care about this.

But Lurie does. He’s got a PR team, and you can be sure they are well aware that the fanbase (save the 3 idiots) is united in their disapproval here. He is reading the vitriole spewing from the vast majority of Eagles fans (different from the relative split of other questionable moves – Shady, Desean etc).

Kelly is really backing himself into a corner here.

He might not care…..but there’s no way the owner isn’t aware that the rest of the league is laughing right now.

Sam “I won’t have thrown a pass in an NFL game for 23 months when I take the field” Bradford better come through, else we’re in for another round of complete upheaval next off season.

Though the good news there, at least the new GM/Coach will have a legit shot at the #1 or #2 QB in that draft!

Who cares about the opinion polls of Fans and the hysteria over Nick Foles!

Its pure ridiculous!

Chip Kelly doesn’t and shouldn’t care about this.

His job is to build a championship team and the most important component in that building process is the Quarterback

Chip Kelly understood that Nick Foles was not the guy who could get it done.

He may have also realized that he wouldn’t be able to trade up in the draft to get Mariota.

So instead of sitting around hoping that Nick Foles somehow transforms into Tom Brady…he made a bold and intelligent move.

He got rid of Foles, he is taking a look at Sam Bradford..a player with the talent to play in his system, with the arm, and the mental aspect.

He hasn’t tied himself to Bradford by signing him to a long term deal…he is going to wait and see if the guy stays healthy

He will then sign a rookie prospect at QB to groom and hope that Sanchez can cut down on the turnovers if he is pressed into action.

Chip made the move at the QB position that he needed to make…if Chip should be blasted about anything it is letting Shady McCoy go…not the Nick Foles move…

But the Dumb Nick Foles Fans dont have a clue

Getting rid of Nick Foles improves the team…its addition by subtraction!

Go Eagles!!

Chip: People, we live in a world of football, and football has to be managed by men with intelligence. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, fake Eagles GM’s? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for McCoy, and you curse the front office. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know — that McCoy’s trade, while tragic, probably saved cap room; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves football programs.

You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at draft parties, you want me in charge of the football — you need me in charge of the football.

I use words like “hurry up,” “uptempo,” “fast.” I use these words as the backbone of a life spent building something. You use them as a punch line.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a fan who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the successful football that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it.

I would rather that you just said “thank you” and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a playbook and respect this post. Either way, I don’t give a DAMN what the media or the fans think would get them a championship title!”

Eagles Media: “Do you think you’re better than Big Red?”

Chip: “I’m doing the job I was—“

Eagles Media: “Do you think you’re better than Big Red?!?!”

Chip: “You’re god damn right I do!”

They are still shocked that Foles has been given the boot

So not they are turning on Chip Kelly and the Eagles

They were fine with Chip getting rid of great players like DJax and Shady

But now Chip is persona non grata for proving them wrong and getting rid of that Bum-Nick Foles

So instead of being happy about the obvious upgrade…they are enraged, hurt and whining…

They are bailing out on the team…abandon ship because of Nick Foles

They are not Eagles Fans their Nicky Foles fans

Ya’ll can all take ya asses to St Louis…and watch Nick Foles become a backup down there….

Time to move on..

You know what he likes about Bradford?

He’s a dink and dunk machine. Good for a coach that wants to spread the ball “horizontally”‘, not vertically. Had a terrible time throwing deep with the Rams.

In fact, I think that’s probably what Kelly liked least about Foles. His propensity to chuck it deep too often.

From Bill Barnwell on Grantland:

The obvious link between Bradford and the Eagles is Pat Shurmur, the Philadelphia offensive coordinator who held that same role for St. Louis in 2010, Bradford’s rookie season. That was probably Bradford’s high-water mark as a pro in terms of promise, although Stuart wrote a convincing piece at the time that Bradford’s statistics were far less impressive than they seemed. Given Shurmur’s struggles to develop Colt McCoy or Brandon Weeden in Cleveland and that the credit for whatever Foles has done mostly goes to Chip Kelly, Bradford remains the former TYFNC Award winner’s most successful pupil.

You can crib together pieces of an argument that Bradford might be a good fit for Kelly and the Philadelphia offense. Bradford ran a high-tempo spread offense in college at Oklahoma, although the last meaningful tape of him in that attack dates back to 2008. He’s posted a relatively low 2.2 percent interception rate as a pro, including a 14-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio during his abbreviated 2013 season. Bradford has all the physical characteristics you would hope for from a franchise quarterback, although it’s also worth remembering he’s torn both of those ACLs since the last time we saw him getting meaningful action against an NFL pass rush.

The easiest argument against Bradford is the one I laid out last August. Take a look at the 2013 pass maps Kirk Goldsberry generated for Bradford (in his last active season) and Foles (during his otherworldly campaign):

Foles was incredible throwing deep that season, doing so effectively and on a frequent basis. Bradford didn’t throw deep at all, and when he did, he posted a dismal QBR. In his career, 9.9 percent of his passes have traveled 20 yards or more in the air, which ranks 24th out of 29 qualifying passers over that time frame. His QBR on those throws was also 24th out of 29. And his average pass has traveled just 7.5 yards in the air; only Alex Smith has managed to be worse.

Rams fans complained after the article that it somehow wasn’t Bradford’s fault — that, through all the offensive coordinators and draft picks and free-agent dollars spent on receivers and linemen, it was everybody else and not their quarterback. But last year, we got a full season of the Rams offense without Bradford. And what do you know? They suddenly somehow found a way to throw downfield! The combination of Austin Davis and Shaun Hill, hardly superstar quarterbacks, threw passes 20 yards or more on 13.4 percent of their passes, the eighth-highest rate in the league. Their QBR on those passes was 93.6, which was 12th among NFL teams. Either Kenny Britt is the greatest downfield weapon the league has ever seen, or Bradford is not a good downfield passer. You pick.

BTW – for Songs and Kool…the opiginal article has pictures and graphics on it, so you might be able to understand it if you take a look.

Vinniedaloser, I have a better article on the Blecher report. A very good article from Cian Fahey
“Good quarterback play is what Bradford can give the Eagles offense. In a vacuum, Bradford has always been a good NFL quarterback. It’s not widely accepted because to come to this conclusion, you need to be able to isolate his performances from the offense in which he has played.

Bradford’s greatest strength is his accuracy.”
As oppose to Foles who he says:
“Foles was at his best throwing to intermediate routes directed toward the sideline. He was able to consistently give his receivers opportunities to catch the ball in those areas. However, his shorter accuracy often strained receivers unnecessarily, and his deep accuracy was simply bad.”
When you compare this to some very sharp and telling observations from Chip Kelly today in his press conference when he said and I am paraphrasing ‘ when you evaluate a Quarterback you can’t just look at there stats you see the QB make a 1 yard throw and the running back runs for 80 yards that’s on the running not the QB…or you see receivers make incredible catches that’s not the QB that’s the receiver…I watch every throw Bradford made in the NFL and he is very accurate and can make all the throws’

Greatest strength is his arm accuracy. Big indictment. Since if that’s his best it’s not that good at 58 percent.

According to spreads he’s a dink and dunk qb like the sanchize
Now down field attack like foles

Remember how excited the fan base was initially when the sanchize took over. First round pick, pedigree although he was mediocre with the Jets, with kelly his career will be resurrected.

Sounds just like we now hear about Bradford. Another prospect that that never lived up to his draft status. Yeah. It will be different with the chip. Just Like The San chize

I’m glad for nick foles. He’s going to a franchise that is not an abomination and the fans will respect him. Along With His coach.

there is something wrong with chip kelly. I’m sure that Larry foles has told his son that. He’s better off

Chip kelly gutted the eagles offense he got rid of the best talent in the nfl. Young, talented players. The offense was set for years with a developing, promising qb.

They were about three or four players away on defense from making a super bowl run.

Chip Hit The Reset button.

Jaws said it best – Bradford never lived-up to the potential he showed in college — Foles exceeded the expectations of him coming into the league.

Jaws watched every play of Bradford’s on film, he saw nothing that makes him think Bradford is better than Foles…. Jaws thinks it was Shurmur that sold Chip on Bradford based on his perceived potential…

Which confirms a very important point

Draft status is only significant for the bonus money and rookie contract.

After that it’s about whether you can play how you play

Based on the latter, Bradford is not in the same league as foles.

The fact that Kelly missed this is mind boggling.

Does anyone know how Much Cap Space do the Eagles have now with Adding Bradford & Matthews & Thurmond…

50 to start right?

-13 Bradford
-13.5 Maxwell
-6.5 Graham
-4.5 Stupid Sanchez
-4 Matthews
-3.5 Thurmond

I think that’s around 45 million gone and they need to keep somewhere around 5 for rookies soooooo..

Well the good new fans is this… There is no rookie qb. When you trade starting QBs it’s not a rebuild, it’s all in. Chip expects lots of wins and deep playoff run

koolbreeze

March 11, 2015 7:57 pm

Chip’s news conference was very revealing, open, and he laid it out clearly.
Rather than stay with a mediocre QB that doesn’t have the mental tools to run the offense…Chip is taking a shot with a guy that he has evaluated and his Offensive Coordinator has determined is smarter, a better arm who will play better in Chip’s Quarterback friendly system!
Chip is taking a shot…going with who he has evaluated as the best QB that’s realistically available to the Eagles
Like a lot of people who have evaluated the draft, the Eagles dont believe that they have enough to move from 20 to the top 10…
I’m going with Chip on this move…it is a very sound football move!
Go Eagles!

Kool as you and your alter ego have pointed out it’s all about the playoffs… And since he was drafted in 2010 Bradford has been MONEY in the playoffs.. He has proven in his numerous trips to the playoffs to shine when the lights are brightest… He takes his teams down for the lead in the fourth quarter and on to victory…his playoff record is exemplary

what a hypocrite you guys are haveablunt…you and your multiple profile friends…the guy played with poor coaching, bad offensive lines, and terrible teams…when it was Nick Foles you whined about the Offensive line injuries even when it was obvious that Oline was pass protecting well…
Good thing Chip didn’t fall for that BS
Again…Chip did a good job in this situation…its an upgrade…he got rid of a guy who didn’t have the talent, the heart, or the smarts to win big games for us and we got a QB who has a strong arm, by all accounts a smart, intelligent pocket passing QB who gets rid of the ball quickly
Its addition by subtraction…we got rid of a pretender, a QB who does not have what it takes to take us to the big dance…and upgraded the position to take a look at a more talented QB

Good move Chip…good move!

I listened to Bradford press conference and he sounded like a prospect that never lived up to his billing

He sounded nothing like a leader. Nothing Like A prospect that exceeded hid billing like nick foles

No wonder the rams are ecstatic. The rams fleeced this little mole chip kelly.

LOL…what a farce! And Nick Foles sounded like the fearless leader poised to lead the Eagles to great championship heights!!

Nick Foles will be carrying a clipboard in St Louis…riding the bench because the offense will be too complicated for him…

He was struggling in this QB friendly offense here…now he goes to an even more conventional offense where he is got to think even more…

Thinking on his feet, reading defenses, making adjustments and audibles at the line…LOL…Foles is going to be mentally overwhelmed and sitting on the bench..a third string QB behind Austin Davis and Kellen Clemens

Damn….you are backtracking faster than TS used to

Where one Foles just ran slowly, now he’s slow mentally (to fit your stupid thesis)

Where once Kelly needed a mobile QB, now all he needs is a better arm and who is smarter

Where once the eagles had to get Mariotta at all costs, now its “like a lot of people the Eagles…..”

Where once Foles didn’t have a big arm, now Bradford has a better arm, (disregarding that over the past decade only one starting QB has a worse QBR with passes over 20 yards – Alex Smith)

Flip flopping back pedaling puss.

Vinniedafool…

stop with the misdirection…

Check the archives…its all there

I’ve said on so many occasions…

Foles is not only physically slow…but mentally slow

I’ve said over and over again…

I know you are so embarrassed…

You said Foles would be Starting again this year

You were calling for the Eagles to resign him at Kaepernick’s money…LOL

You had the Eagles resigning Foles for big bucks and making him our young franchise QB…the face of the team

In the end…we had to pay St Louis to take him off our hands…LOL

Keep pulling out those meaningless stats…Chip Kelly ridiculed that very same ignorant statistical approach to evaluating QB’s in his excellent press conference today

Foles will be flipping burgers with you at McDonalds soon…he can tell you all about his stories as a washed up former QB who had a little luck but folded up when it was time to play for the big money!

You should be too embarrassed to come on this site..still sprouting stats about Foles…and now wanting to see the Eagles fail

Fake ass Vinnie

Fake ass Fools

Nah…you added the mentally slow bit only came about because you were butthurt ’cause we ragged on Vick not being able to read.

Chip Kelly might ridicule stats, but he’s 0-4 on QB decisions so far, and I’m not sure decision 5 is going to work out.

The fact that Kelly paid is exactly why people are upset dimtwit. Not that Foles is gone, but that the Rams fleeced the Eagles on this trade.

And buddy, I know you’re still reeling from the Wallmart $2 raise bit I hit you with last week, and so you pathetically tried to come back (twice!) with the McDonalds bit….but just a bit of advice….if you get slagged with a minimum wage job shot, then try something new….don’t come back with the same type of insult. Its weak.

You just have to man up and accept the reality Vinnie..its over

Its just like I have told you for a couple of years now

Foles is done, finished, and dismissed

You can come up with all the quips, commentary, diversions

Done? What the fuck am I upset about. Big tall immobile pocket passer is in the house. Just what I always wanted.

Foles, not Bradford, I don;t care, as long as its not some never going to win scrambling idiot I’m good.

There are only 3 problems with thsi deal.

1 – I still think Foles is better than Bradford, but I may be wrong
2 – Bradford is being helt together by duct tape
3 – Paying a 2nd and 4th for Bradford = bent over

Otherwise, I’m fine. Immobile pocket passer in the house.

You can keep disguising your anger with the “mentally….” business all you want, but dep down you’re pissed buddy. You wanted Mariotta, you wanted vick, you extolled the virtues of shitty Sanchez….you wanted a running idiot, you were dying for a running idiot…..and you’re trying to mask it in all this “Bradford is great” BS…..

Man, you are pathetic.

Still angry over missing that $2 raise I guess.

He gone…finished…outta here!

Your heart is broken

Your frustrated and angry

Like I told you…Nick Foles is not a franchised QB

Like I told you…the Eagles are getting rid of him

I was right…you were wrong

I told you he was a bum that the Eagles would get rid of …and you quoted his stats…his 14-4…his 27-2…

We know why you are upset, broke, bewildered and frustrated

LOL…

Foles is finished…he is done

He didn’t get the big time contract you were sure the Eagles were going to give him

He wasn’t the Franchise QB, the All-American Boy to lead us to a championship like you predicted

He was dumped, he’s finished, done…outta here

Just like we I told you…just as we have argued for years about…

The argument is over…you lost because your Vinniedaloser

Bradford said today he thought about quitting after his second knee injury.

He could not commit to when he will be ready this season.

Chip kelly needs to be fired

it goes back to his up bringing, experience.

Yawwwwwwnnnn…who gives a flying fuck about Nick Foles ‘upbringing or his ‘experience’…
Listen at the Nick Foles buttlickers…now calling for Chip Kelly to be fired…LMAO!!!!

Chip Kelly should be commended for such a bold move in the face of naysayers and the apologists for that bum ass Nick Foles.

Please keep things in context…Foles is not a bum ass because he’s a bad guy…he is a nice, down to earth likeable kid…but when it comes to leading a football team to championship levels…he is a bum ass and Chip Kelly made the right move.

Chip Kelly has given this team new life…given us a chance to improve the team by getting rid of some real dead weight…getting rid of a slow moving, slow thinking QB who just cant hand the mental part of the game….

Chip Kelly should be commended for this bold and innovative move!

Kool you keep flapping your gums but you are always wrong.

This is the worst off season ever for the eagles. Kelly gave up on one of the best qb prospects. Three years invested in his development, all thrown away for a reclamation project at over 10 x the cost. Injured, two knee surgeries, a shoulder injury

Kelly gutted one of the most prolific young offenses.

It’s a damn shame

jakdog..I was right…

I told you all that Nick Foles was done

I told you that Chip Kelly thought he was a bum

This is the dawn of a new era…the defense has been improved

Getting rid of Nick Foles was an excellent move…getting rid of a guy who couldn’t handle the mental load…he was in over his head and Chip saw it…he saw all of the missed receivers, he remembers all of the times DJax threw his hands up in pure frustration because Nick Foles missed him wide open down the field
No tears are being shed for Nick…the players knew the AX was coming for Nick…and we see his real worth…
We had to give St Louis extra picks to take Nick Foles off of our hands
Kelly gutted some dead weight and a player that was not worthy of being a franchise QB for us…

Good job Chip!
